Target and Delta are among the companies that pledged Friday to pay women and men equally. Friday was also Women’s Equality Day.
It went on to say the company has had a goal of pay equality for awhile. Target has already implemented training to prevent bias as well as an annual audit to make sure pay is fair.
Additionally, the company’s CEO – Brian Cornell – recently became a co-chair of the Network of Executive Women’s Future Fund. The campaign is aimed at reaching a point where payouts are 50/50 between men and women.
The CEO of PepsiCo is the other co-chair.
A total of 29 companies signed the White House pledge on Friday.
Among those are Delta, Apple, Coca-Cola, Facebook, General Motors, Microsoft and Nike.
Delta Airlines reported in April that it had almost perfect pay equality between men and women – 98 percent equal in administrative jobs and 100 percent among scale employees.
More than 50 companies and organizations – employing millions of Americans – have signed the White House’s pledge.
Equal pay in America
According to the White House, a typical American woman who works full-time in the U.S. makes 78 cents for every dollar men make.
In 1963, women earned 59 cents for every dollar.
And for women of color, the gap is even bigger – 64 cents for African American and 56 cents for Latina women today.
The Washington Post noted earlier this year things like having kids and which careers men and women choose may play a role in the pay gap.
And according to a 2014 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women who’ve never married make about 94 cents for every dollar men make.
