A historic building in the city of Hibbing, which currently houses a popular sports bar, was damaged in a serious fire.
The blaze at Brick Yard Sports Bar and Grill was reported around 5 a.m. Monday, the Hibbing Fire Department said on Facebook, with heavy smoke coming from the front and back portions of the building.
The department called in more agencies for help, including the Virginia Fire Department – at times there were 1,200 gallons of water a minute flowing from just one of the hoses, the department said on Facebook.
WDIO reports firefighters were on the scene until past 1 p.m.
The Hibbing Fire Department says the main damage appears to be on the second floor (where there are empty apartments) and roof – there were sprinklers on the main floor and in the basement, but not up top.
The roof eventually collapsed, according to the Hibbing Daily Tribune, and it’s not clear whether the second floor apartments arel structurally safe anymore.
The building has “significant fire, smoke, and water damage,” the department says, though a cost estimate wasn’t available.
The Hibbing Historical Society says the building is one of the original that Oliver Mining Company built on Howard Street – it was completed in 1920.
The fire department is investigating the cause.
It’s the second major fire at a downtown Hibbing business in recent months, FOX 21 points out, with Abel Chiropractic going up in flames in June.
