A documentary crew following Hope Solo and two other U.S. soccer players at the Olympics caught on camera the moment Solo found out she had been suspended and had her contract terminated for calling an opponent a “bunch of cowards.”
“Seventeen f—— years and it’s over,” Solo yells while fighting back tears in a video from “Keeping Score,” obtained by PEOPLE.
“Six months suspension. No pay. Terminated contract. Effective immediately,” she says while hugging her husband.
The U.S. was fresh off a stunning loss to Sweden in the Olympic quarterfinals when Solo sounded off on Sweden’s style of play.
“I’m very proud of this team,” Solo said. “But I also think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly believe that.”
