Elderly ND man survives 12 hours floating on lake

This is a remarkable story from North Dakota from the weekend, when an elderly man reported missing on a lake was found alive having floated in the water for 12 hours.

FOX affiliate station KFYR reports that the 73-year-old man from Sheyenne, North Dakota, was found on the shores of Devils Lake on Saturday morning, 12 hours after his fishing boat sank.

The man, who was wearing a life jacket, washed up on shore having held onto a plastic gas can as he floated overnight, the TV station notes.

According to the Forum News Service, he had been reported missing on Saturday having never returned from a fishing trip on Friday evening.

The man was reported as being “a little sore” but ok, the newspaper notes.

Benson County Sheriff Steve Rohrer spoke with KZZY Radio, saying the man is lucky to be alive and revealed that he had only recently started wearing a lifejacket when out fishing.

“It is an amazing outcome to what could have been a tragedy,” he told the station, adding that he had been found a few hours after a search and rescue operation was launched.

Devils Lake is the largest natural body of water in North Dakota, covering 3,810 square miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
