Eagan man shot in head during officer-involved incident is identified

The identity of the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Eagan this past weekend has been revealed.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed that Justin Kulhanek-Derks, 37, died from a gunshot wound to the head on Sunday.

Two Eagan police officers are on administrative leave after the shooting. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety on Wednesday named them as Sgt. Nathan Tennessen and Officer Alison Burstein.

According to a news release, police received several 911 calls about a man shooting a handgun outside an apartment building on the 1200 block of Ironwood Lane.

Kulhanek-Derks was sitting in a car in the parking lot of his apartment building with a handgun. As officers approached Kulhanek-Derks on foot, he fired at them.

He died from a gunshot wound to the head, but it hasn’t been revealed at this stage whether it was police or Kulhanek-Derks who fired the fatal shot.

The case is still under investigation by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. There is not any known footage of the incident.

According to the Star Tribune, it has been over 20 years since there was an officer-involved shooting that resulted in a death in Eagan. It was also the first officer-involved shooting there at all in recent years.

Kulhanek-Derks lived at the Forest Ridge apartment complex with his teenage daughter, reported WJON. Neighbors said that he had recently been “despondent” because of a breakup with his fiancée.
