St. Paul Saints ‘torture’ fans with Nickelback music, give back nickels

The St. Paul Saints will celebrate Nickelback Wednesday night by making fans “withstand musical torture.”

Hey, they’re the ones who said it.

From the time gates open until the seventh inning, a news release says only music from the wannabe “Rockstars” will be played.

What’s wrong with that?

Well, Rolling Stone readers named Nickelback the second worst band of the 1990s, right behind Creed.

If you’re wondering what a very popular – and possibly even more hated – rock band has to do with baseball, here’s the deal: Nickelback is a Canadian band and the Saints are playing a Canadian team, the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

And as incentive to go – and not get up and leave halfway through – the Saints will be giving a nickel back to anyone who stays.

The game starts at 7:05 p.m.

Why do people hate Nickelback so much anyways?

Nickelback is a pretty successful band, having sold more than 50 million albums worldwide as of 2012.

So how is it that a popular band with a bunch of hit singles can be so hated?

According to VH1, a lot of people say they hate the band because “all their songs sound the same.”

Another reason is that people simply have something against lead singer, Chad Kroeger.

The Observer has a detailed article explaining a theory that people just hate Nickelback because it’s the popular thing to do.
