At least 10 people killed in explosion at Philippines market

An explosion at a busy Philippines market Friday night killed at least 10 people and injured more.

The blast occurred in Davao City, home to about 1.6 million people and located in the southeast of the country’s largest southern island.

“It’s a sad day for Davao and for the Philippines,” said Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte in a statement via Facebook.

The explosion happened around 10:30 p.m. Friday night in an area near one of Davao’s popular tourist hotels, according to Al Jazeera. The city is also the hometown of newly-elected president, Rodrigo Duterte.

Vice Mayor Duterte, the president’s son, said at least 10 people were killed, and many more wounded – RT says at least 60 were injured.

“Right now, we cannot yet give definite answer to as to who is behind this as we are also trying to determine what really exploded,” Paolo Dutere said in the statement.

A local TV host has been tweeting photos from the scene. Note that some of them are graphic.

Here is some video as well.
