The Revolution pay tribute to Prince with bittersweet performance

The first of three sold-out Prince tribute shows happened Thursday night at First Avenue, and the reactions ranged from positive to bittersweet.

The Revolution – Wendy, Lisa, Brownmark, Dr. Fink and Bobby Z – as well as special guests Dez Dickerson and André Cymone headlined the night of grieving.

“In the end, the fans at First Avenue and the band members onstage weren’t really partying like it was 1999,” said Lyndsey Parker in her review of the night for Yahoo Music. “They were partying like it was 2016: grieving a major loss, acknowledging the sad passage of time and the fact that Prince can never be replaced — but still exuberantly celebrating the man’s music and legacy.”

The Revolution played through all of his hits, including “Little Red Corvette” and “Let’s Go Crazy.” (Shown below.)

For the most part, fans and mourners had positive things to say about their evening celebrating the Purple One’s legacy and loss.

Neo-soul artist Bilal got rave reviews for his set of songs that included “The Beautiful Ones” and “When Doves Cry.”

And of course the night wasn’t complete without the essential Purple Rain sing along.

While the remaining tribute shows are sold out, the Friday and Saturday night shows are followed by late-night dance parties featuring Roots drummer DJ Questlove.

Those who already have tickets to the concert are invited to stay but others can pick them up at the door for $10.
