Charges: Mpls. driver fled cops, fatally struck pregnant teen

The man accused of speeding away from police and fatally striking a pregnant 16-year-old has been charged.

The incident happened last Friday around 9:55 p.m. when authorities saw a black SUV speed over the center median at 33rd Avenue North.  That’s according to a news release from Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Police tried to pull over the driver – identified as 36-year-old Howard William Amos –  but Amos reportedly started driving even faster.

The news release says he was going 55 mph in a residential area at one point and ran a stop sign.

Diana Garcia-Alvarado, 16, and her boyfriend were walking home around that time. The boyfriend tells police they heard sirens and saw a vehicle with its lights off coming toward them.

The couple stood on the median of the roundabout at 36th and Emerson.

The boyfriend says Garcia-Alvarado panicked and ran across the street.  She made it to the curb, but Amos’ SUV hit the roundabout and bounced over to the curb where Garcia-Alvarado was, the release says.

Some parked cars also got smashed.

Then authorities say Amos got out of his vehicle and started running.

When an officer caught up with Amos, he was in a different car that had three women and two children in it. Freeman says it appears the suspect was trying to steal the car.

Police eventually got him out of that vehicle and arrested him.

Meanwhile, the 16-year-old victim was taken to the hospital. She died shortly after, and doctors reported that she had been about 12 weeks pregnant.

Amos is being charged with simple robbery and fleeing police in a motor vehicle resulting in a death.

Police have taken a blood sample from Amos to see if drugs or alcohol were a factor. Those results are pending.

Authorities say they found a handgun in Amos’ vehicle.  DNA testing is underway to determine if it is his.

He is prohibited from possessing a gun, officials note.

Amos also had two felony warrants for his arrest – one for burglary and possession of stolen property charges, and another for fleeing in a motor vehicle.
