Police: St. Paul school bus crashes, sends 7 students to the hospital

A school bus crash in St. Paul sent seven students to the hospital Friday afternoon.

The St. Paul Police Department said the crash happened at the intersection of Geranium Avenue and Weide Street around 2:45 p.m.

A pickup truck crashed into the bus and sent both vehicles off the street – the bus smashed into a house and the pickup truck tipped over on the yard, the Pioneer Press reported.

The Star Tribune said people were home at the time. The house’s mud porch and the steps leading up to it were damaged.

Authorities told the Pioneer Press they’re investigating to figure out exactly what happened, but it appears the truck driver didn’t yield to the bus.

A news release from St. Paul Public Schools reported 34 students had been on the bus. They were from Highland Park Middle School and Highland Park Senior High.

Police said seven of the middle school students were taken to the hospital as a “precautionary measure.”

“While accidents do happen, we are fortunate that, from initial reports, all those involved appear OK,”  Jackie Turner, chief operating officer for Saint Paul Public Schools, said in a statement.

The rest of the students were either picked up by family members or put on another bus.

On Monday, nurses will check in with all students who were on the bus when the accident happened, according to St. Paul Public Schools.

Following a preliminary investigation, authorities said drugs and alcohol don’t appear to have been a factor.
