A motorcyclist killed himself after leading police on a 5-mile chase that ended in Forest Lake Monday night, officials said Tuesday.
Police tried to pull over the 38-year-old Coon Rapids man just after 10 p.m. Monday after receiving a report he fled from law enforcement in Anoka County, news release from the Wyoming Police Department says.
The man had apparently brandished a handgun in the City of Oak Grove, however no additional details were given regarding that incident.
Wyoming police pursued the motorcyclist for 5 miles until he crashed his motorcycle into a fence at the rest area off Interstate 35 in Forest Lake (see map at right).
Preliminary reports say the man fired his gun after crashing his motorcycle, and police found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police were still in their vehicles when the shot was fired, and officers did not shoot their weapons during the incident, the release says.
The name of the motorcyclist has not been released.
An investigation into what led to the pursuit, as well as the final moments following the crash is underway, the release says. The Forest Lake Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner are assisting Wyoming police with the investigation.
