Arson at New Hope apartment block displaces at least 11 families

An apartment building fire in New Hope, which is believed to have been started deliberately, has displaced at least 11 families.

The West Metro Fire Rescue said in a news release it was called to the Tradewinds apartments at 8100 45th Ave. N. just before 11 p.m., with firefighters able to contain the blaze that had started in a stairwell.

The department confirmed the fire was the result of arson and is offering a $2,500 reward for information.

According to an email news release from the American Red Cross, volunteers were at the scene to provide assistance to at least 11 families – which included four children – who have been forced from their homes as a result of the fire.

But KSTP reports the total number of people forced from their homes was as high as 50, with 25-30 units sustaining smoke and water damage.

Resident Lisa Palm told the TV station she heard the fire alarms after returning home from work, and ran down the hallway knocking on doors, telling people to get out.

She said she could barely see because the smoke was so thick.

Anyone with information about the arson is asked to call police on 1-800-723-2020.
