The Interstate 35W Bridge in Minneapolis will glow blue in honor of Jacob Wetterling.
Gov. Mark Dayton told the Minnesota Department of Transportation to light the bridge in blue for 11 nights, starting Thursday and ending Sept. 25 – the day of Jacob’s memorial service at the College of St. Benedict.
Blue is the color used to signify child abuse prevention, and 11 is Jacob’s jersey number.
The No. 11 has also inspired a movement – #11forJacob – that began days after his remains were recovered from a farm in Paynesville. That came nearly 27 years after the 11-year-old was snatched from a rural road in his hometown of St. Joseph, leading to decades of questions about what might have happened to the boy.
The Wetterling family and the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center asked people to honor Jacob by living life based on 11 values, including being fair, honest and joyful.
Tributes to Jacob and the Wetterling family have since poured in, with sports teams – including the Minnesota Twins – wearing No. 11 in memory of the boy.
