Body of MN student pulled from river near Luther College

The body of a student from the Twin Cities has been pulled from a river near Luther College in Iowa, where he was studying.

Police in Decorah launched a search and public appeal on Saturday to find 21-year-old Bjorn Norderhaug, who was reported missing after not returning home from a downtown bar on Friday night.

Norderhaug, who according to his Facebook page lived in Chanhassen, though the WCF Courier lists his hometown as Eden Prairie, was last seen at the Corner Bar at 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release Sunday afternoon confirming that a body had been found in the Upper Iowa River, north of Decorah, at around 9:30 a.m.

The Sheriff’s Office and the Winneshiek County Medical Examiner’s Office were able to determine the body was Norderhaug, a computer science major at the college.

Luther College issued a statement on Facebook confirming his death, and held a prayer gathering for students on Sunday evening.

“The Luther community is devastated by this loss and continues to pray for Bjorn’s family. We ask that the community come together and support one another in this difficult time,” said Luther President Paula Carlson.

The college is also offering counseling for students affected by Norderhaug’s death.

The incident remains under investigation by police.
