WHAT ARE YOU KNOWN FOR PROFESSIONALLY?
Storytelling. 20-plus years as a television anchor & investigative reporter in Minneapolis. More recently, finding new ways of doing things and tackling the problem of making complicated stuff simpler through invention.
WHAT SPARKED THE IDEA FOR BRINGMETHENEWS?
Friends persuaded me I had an unusual opportunity (as a longtime TV news anchor) to drive the public to a new and better way to consume news online. We help the public break through the intense noise pollution of the Internet, creating a new kind of news network … helping people get the best news in the market – in real time – regardless of the source. We wanted to show brands how they could break through all that noise, too. Brands essentially become teachers. Super relevant … and very connected to the “why” of what they do.
WHAT’S YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE?
Currently on a surreal adventure as founder/CEO of BringMeTheNews. I’m also a partner at GoKart Labs, and the founder/CEO of i.e. network. I used to be a TV guy, most recently an anchor/investigative reporter at KARE.
WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT PROFESSIONALLY?
Finding new ways of informing and engaging the public through innovation.
WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT PERSONALLY?
Travel. Learning. Writing. Photography. When I’m combining all of it … I’m in heaven.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
I married the happiest person I ever met – by a country mile. She’s a rock star in her own career … managing communications for major Minnesota business and political leaders for 20 years. And 10 times the parent I could ever be. She makes up for me in so many ways. My kids? Two girls. College & high school. Couldn’t be more different, except for these facts: Each found major personal passions at early stages in their lives (completely self-directed). They’re totally committed to what they do. And they are both among the greatest inspirations in my life.
EVER WON ANY AWARDS?
Among the biggest “Wha…?” moments of my career is winning Best of Show at the New York International Film Festival – when I was 25 – for a series of stories showing how one person can create positive change. Most of the rest are now used as elaborate door stops. Recognition by peers is a cool thing. But never forget – that’s not the thing. The thing … is the thing you’re doing.
QUICK! WHAT WORDS DESCRIBE YOU?
WHAT IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIFE?
Simon & Garfunkel “The Boxer.” Fleetwood Mac “Landslide.” Eminem “Lose Yourself.”
ANY FUN FACTS YOU WANT TO SHARE?
I wrote a kids’ book with a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. In the sixth grade I was asked to come up on a stage at a science museum to wear/model a NASA space suit … Once I was up there in the thing, the presenters explained it as, “He’s actually wearing a high-tech girdle.” That was kind of embarrassing.
WHAT FICTIONAL CHARACTER ARE YOU MOST LIKE?
My kids will tell you I most remind them of Phil Dunphy of “Modern Family.”
