WHAT ARE YOU KNOWN FOR PROFESSIONALLY? (OR WHAT DO YOU HAVE A KNACK FOR?)
I’m an advertising guy. I was an ad major at the University of Minnesota (Ski-U-Mah to Steve Wehrenberg, current School of Journalism & Mass Communication Program Director!). I have worked both sides of the brain since being “out in the wild”. I’ve worked in a media, product management, account planning, and creative environment. I’ve written ad copy and I’ve optimized ad campaigns. I’ve got a very diverse advertising skill set.
WHY DID YOU COME TO BMTN?
After years working on national properties, accounts, and initiatives, I wanted to work in a Twin Cities focused content environment. We have a unique market and our audience is smart, savvy, hip, and progressive. I’d love to share stories with that kind of audience.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT PROFESSIONALLY?
I am very excited about the native advertising space. Ever shared an ad banner? Would you even want to?! No please to both. But can you share an interesting sponsored story? At Bringmethenews.com, this happens quite often every day by our audience. From an advertiser’s point of view, you get more than a click. You get your mobile presence, social engagement, and viral activity. Your message is getting spread by real people. From my point of view and learnings, I can look at a whole new set of data and defined KPIs.
WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT PERSONALLY? WHAT CAN’T YOU STOP TALKING ABOUT?
Programmatic delivery of ads and the automation of marketing. There is a lot of data and companies collecting that data and serving ads based on that data. This means we are entering the period of consolidation. A lot more acquisitions will be coming down the line. For fun, you should download ‘Ghostery’ as a Chrome extension and watch what companies are tracking your internet activities.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
I have a very creative, kind, and centered wife, Lisa. She is a talented digital designer, illustrator, and a natural at being a mom. She needs to be as our little boy Oliver is quite the rascal! He has a ton of energy and a healthy dose of curiosity. They are the collective total package.
QUICK. WORD ASSOCIATION. WHAT WORDS DESCRIBE YOU?
Resilient, inventive, kind of Cambodian.
WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU LOVE?
Hanging out with my wife and son in our various trips around the 612. Coffee and donuts. Playing a very fundamental, below the rim brand of basketball.
WHICH FICTIONAL CHARACTER ARE YOU MOST LIKE, OR WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY MEETING?
That’s a tough one. Usually, you either go very current or very retro on these type of questions. I’ll bend it a little bit. Probably Desmond Hume from ‘Lost’. Because of his character’s story arc (no spoilers here!), he has a deconstructed view of how the island works. An out of sequence point of view. There are some elements of what he does in that space, that I feel relates a bit to what I do here and at other stops in my career. Plus you got to love his indistinguishable look of ‘crazy eyes’ when stuff starts hitting the fan!
