The City of Minneapolis announced Thursday that staff are recommending that Minnesota Agape Movement take control of the People's Way, a former Speedway gas station at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue that was destroyed during civil unrest following Floyd's murder at the intersection in 2020, which has become a gathering place for activists.

"George Floyd Square carries significant meaning for Minneapolis and for people around the world,” Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to partnering with Agape and the community as we take this next step together to continue building toward the long-term vision for the Square.”

The city purchased the site in 2023 and started seeking a new community owner in 2024.

“We’ve done a lot of work in the last several years to ensure the community’s voice is centered at George Floyd Square,” said Alexander Kado, senior project manager for the City of Minneapolis. “Throughout the (request for qualifications) process, Agape demonstrated a deep commitment to collaborating with both the City and the community to realize a site that truly honors the Square.”

Agape has been a fixture at George Floyd Square since helping the city regain control of the area after it was declared an "autonomous zone" in protest of Floyd's killing by a Minneapolis police officer.

Around that time, Frey was accused of misusing his emergency powers during the COVID-19 pandemic by awarding a $359,000 contract to Agape for the clearing of George Floyd Square in 2021, rather than going through the city council.

Agape is one of four nonprofits that submitted a proposal to transform the People's Way into a permanent community space, though another was later withdrawn.

A survey for the redevelopment found that two alternative proposals – from Rise & Remember and Urban League Twin Cities – had greater support than the proposal submitted by Agape.

“The Minnesota Agape Movement is honored to move forward in partnership with the City of Minneapolis, business owners, artists, families and the broader community on the future of the Peoples’ Way,” CEO Reginald Ferguson said in a statement. “We see this opportunity as both an honor and a responsibility to ensure the future of the space reflects healing, remembrance, justice, culture, economic opportunity, and continued investment in the people who carried this space through its most painful and powerful moments.

Agape has proposed a six-story building with a cafe, museum, business incubator, an entertainment and media hub, restaurant and bar, and rooftop garden.

"This work is about more than a site plan — it is about protecting history, uplifting community voices, and building a lasting impact for generations to come," Ferguson continued. "This moment is bigger than development — it’s about preserving the legacy, humanity, and community voice that made George Floyd Square a sacred space recognized around the world."

Members of the Minneapolis City Council are expected to consider the Agape recommendation during the Business, Housing, and Zoning Committee meeting on June 2 and the full City Council meeting on June 11.

The council has rejected other Frey-backed plans for George Floyd Square, with the mayor and some council members at debating whether it should remain open to traffic or become a pedestrian mall.

A long-awaited plan for the 38th Street and Chicago Avenue intersection was approved in December following extensive community engagement.

Road improvements around George Floyd Square are scheduled to begin in June, six years after Floyd was killed outside Cup Foods, and wrap up next year.

Killen's Irish Pub is now projecting a mid-June opening, according to an update from the North Loop Neighborhood Association.

The 130-seat restaurant and bar has been a work-in-progress for months at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Fourth Street in the former First Draft Tap Haus space.

"Designed in Ireland and brought to life in Minneapolis, the space is meant to feel like a pub you’d stumble into in Ireland: cozy, welcoming, and built for pints, conversation, sports, and music," the business said in a earlier statement. "From the moment you walk in, it’s meant to feel familiar,  like it’s always been there."

Owner Peter Killen is so hellbent on creating an authentic Irish pub that he's shipping many fixtures from his home country. That includes custom barstools, chairs, tables and stained glass from companies based across the Atlantic.

Killen is the former CEO of Cara Irish Pubs, the Minneapolis restaurant group that operates Kieran's Irish Pub and The Local.

At his eponymous bar and restaurant, the first of his own, Killen plans to serve classic pub fare, from fish and chips, to burgers, a Reuben sandwich, and other vessels for corned beef, per the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

Killen's already has an Instagram account, but its website still hasn't launched yet.

The Summer at the Cedar series will feature five Wednesday night shows on the small plaza outside the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood venue, beginning on July 8. Each of the shows will start at 6 p.m. and run for about two hours.

It'll start with a set from hip-hop and folk performer Wic Whitney on July 8. The eclectic lineup continues with ambient and experimental performers the following week, a bill that features Davu Seru and DeVon Russel Gray, Michael Gallope and Mary Hanson Scott, and Dameun Strange and Layne Marika Papach. 

Other performers include the Twin Cities-based Americana ensemble The Foxgloves; Taiga, an electronic duo from Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang; and genre-bending songwriter Daniel Villarreal.

Donna Bourgeois recently created a GoFundMe to pay for healthcare costs for her grandson, Leo, of Spring Park, who suffered multiple injuries when he was hit by a driver on County Road 15 in Mound at around 8 p.m. on May 7.

His mother, Nicole Warolin, told Bring Me The News that Leo suffered a collapsed lung, a broken pelvis, and other breaks to arm, collarbone, rib, foot, and hand bones. He spent four days in the hospital and is now recovering in a wheelchair. 

Leo's mother says she believed he was saved from further injury by wearing a helmet. She believes the driver who struck him was ticketed for distracted driving, but the investigation remains active.

“His recovery will be painful and time consuming. He is in a wheelchair for now, but hopefully his healing can begin now that he’s at home,” Bourgeois wrote on the GoFundMe.

Bourgeois said that while some of Leo’s treatments are covered by insurance, costs associated with his recovery will be “astronomical.” 

As of Thursday, the fundraiser – which you can find here – had reached around $4,500 of its $12,000 goal. 

In a news release, the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office says it has sent out letters to 9 commercial landlords, warning they may be renting out spaces to businesses posing as legitimate massage parlors. In actuality, these shops may really be fronts for commercial sex work and human trafficking. 

“An illicit massage business is a massage establishment where the employees engage in prostitution – very often because they are forced to do so,” the letter details.  

“This is called human trafficking. We need the help of property owners like you to end human trafficking in (the State of Minnesota).” 

The letter also includes the legal penalties of allowing an illegal business to operate, and a list of common red flags property owners can look out for, such as irregular business hours, private entrances, high security measures, and cash-heavy transactions. 

This marks the first step in a collaborative effort between the Attorney General’s Office and the anti-trafficking nonprofit The Network. Ellison also says his office is getting help from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s (BCA) Human Trafficking Investigators Task Force in investigating these reports. 

The enforcement efforts are only targeting human traffickers and those buying sex, not the women being exploited. Property owners were also asked to respond to the letter within 10 business days.

The body camera footage, provided to Bring Me The News after an open records request, shows officer Ibrahim Carson, a two-year veteran of the force, arriving on 1700 block of Oakes Avenue just before 10 p.m. April 7, looking for a “wanted person.”

It then shows Carson chasing Menton after he tries to run inside a house, and a struggle ensues in the front yard.

“Stop resisting!” Carson shouts at one point. 

“I’m not resisting,” Menton replies, telling the officer to get off of him. 

The exact moment of the shooting is not clearly visible, as Carson’s body camera appears to fall to the snow-covered ground. Gunshots aren’t heard in the video either, but someone says “shots fired” following a bright light flash. A woman can be heard screaming in the background.

Carson was injured in the shooting, and was treated at a local hospital.

The release of the body camera footage comes after weeks of outcry from Menton’s family, who say he was shot in the back of the head while he was down on the ground, according to reporting by Northern News Now. 

“In addition to honoring David’s life, we also want to bring awareness to the circumstances surrounding his passing,” a GoFundMe page established to support Menton’s family reads. “No family should have to endure this kind of loss without compassion, support, and a pursuit of understanding.”

At a press conference releasing the video on Tuesday, Superior Police Chief Paul Winterscheidt said a gun was recovered from underneath Menton’s body, and claimed Carson acted "in the context of protecting human life, including his own."

But Menton's mother, Vicky, spoke out at the press conference, criticizing the footage for not showing the full circumstances of her son's killing.

"I want to know the truth. I mean, it’s justice. He was shot in the back of his head. He was down on the ground," she said, per Wisconsin Public Radio.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting, and the Douglas County Attorney’s Office will make the ultimate call on whether or not it was justified and if charges are warranted. 

Law enforcement also released body worn camera footage of a separate shooting involving Superior police on May 10. 

In that case, officers injured two people in a shooting where a suspect was reportedly armed with a knife inside a home, along with another adult.

The Northeast Minneapolis brewery made the announcement Thursday afternoon on social media.

The brewery says that financial challenges have contributed to the decision, including cost increases in its supply chain, shifts in consumer preferences, the COVID-19 pandemic, and "a surge in federal immigration enforcement that directly targeted our wonderful city and deeply affected businesses across the hospitality industry."

"We have been working furiously to identify ways to shift our business model, reduce costs, increase revenues, and find a pathway to operational stability," an announcement states. "Despite pulling every lever available to us, the financial headwinds have proven to be insurmountable, and we have made the very difficult and heartbreaking decision to close our doors."

The brewery will remain open until the end of June, including for its annual Art-A-Whirl music festival, The Electric Zoo.

Co-owner Matt Schwandt co-founded Bauhaus in July 2014 and quickly became a pillar of the Twin Cities craft beer world, at the height of the boom, with its non-exclusive focus on German-style beers like its Wonderstuff pilsner.

Situated in the Crown Iron Works building at 1315 NE Tyler St., Bauhaus has one of the Twin Cities' largest and most robust taprooms.

Bauhaus says it put up an "exhaustive fight" to keep the doors open, diversifying its offerings with hard seltzers, THC drinks, and non-alcoholic beers, as well as co-packing partnerships and taproom upgrades.

The last challenge came in the form of the Trump administration's Operation Metro Surge, which, in addition to the toll on communities, is estimated to have cost the local economy hundreds of millions of dollars through the first two months of the year.

Bauhaus adds that there will be "one last bash" over the weekend of June 26–28 to celebrate its 12-year anniversary, legacy, and final days.

"We are going to send Bauhaus off the way it deserves: with great beer, great music, and the people who made this place what it is," the announcement continues.

"To our staff: you are the soul of Bauhaus. From the first pint poured to the last, you have shown up with professionalism, warmth, and a love for this place that humbles us every day. We could not be more proud of each and every one of you."

Bauhaus is the latest in a string of breweries and distilleries around Minnesota that have closed up shop, with many citing similar economic challenges. HeadFlyer Brewing, also in Northeast Minneapolis, closed its taproom in April.

Other recent closures in the last year include Waconia Brewing in Waconia, Schram Haus Brewery in Chaska, Invictus Brewing in Blaine, Fair State Brewing Cooperative in Minneapolis (which is still brewing, but closed its taproom), LynLake Brewery in Minneapolis, Wild Mind Ales in Minneapolis, Hoops Brewing in Duluth, Alloy Brewing in Coon Rapids, and J. Carver Distillery in Waconia.

Despite those closures, Northeast Minneapolis remains a hub for Twin Cities breweries, with Indeed Brewing, Padraigs Brewing, Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative, and 56 Brewing still in the neighborhood.

Additionally, a once-closed mainstay will return, with Dangerous Man Brewing planning a comeback in the former home of HeadFlyer at 861 E Hennepin Ave.

Earlier Thursday, there was a dust storm warning issued near the town of Hillsboro in eastern North Dakota, not far from the border with Minnesota. That's where strong winds and dust produced near-zero visibility along Interstate 29.

And the weather service has maintained a blowing dust warning in Polk and Clay counties in northwest Minnesota until 5 p.m. Thursday.

Meanwhile, a blowing dust advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. in the following counties: Kandiyohi, McLeod, Meeker, Renville, Sibley, Brown, Nicollet, Redwood, Chippewa, Douglas, Lac Qui Parle, Pope, Stevens, Swift, and Yellow Medicine.

Not only is the blowing dust causing visibility issues on the roads, but it can also lead to health issues, especially for people with respiratory problems.

"Persons with respiratory problems should make preparations to stay indoors until the storm passes. Be ready for a sudden drop in visibility to near zero. If you encounter blowing dust or blowing sand on the roadway or see it approaching, pull off the road as far as possible and put your vehicle in park. Turn the lights all the way off and keep [your] foot off the brake pedal," the weather service advises.

A line of thunderstorms will help dampen some of the dry areas, and that line, which as of 2:15 p.m. was located along a north-south line from roughly Bemidji to Redwood Falls, is tracking to the east-northeast.

Dionisio Martin Limon, 28, of Minneapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene near Powderhorn Park after the crash, which happened shortly before 4:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police determined that Limon was speeding in a pickup truck and ran a stop sign at the intersection of 10th Avenue South and East 38th Street right before hitting the back of the bus.

The bus driver was hospitalized with injuries that aren't life-threatening, and there were no passengers aboard since the bus hadn't yet started service for the morning.

No one was in the house at the time of the collision, with a source at the scene telling Bring Me The News that police had to knock down the door to make sure nobody was inside.

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that the license plates on the pickup driven by Limon belong to a different vehicle. It's unclear whether the pickup itself was stolen.

Bring Me The News has reached out to the Metro Transit Police Department for more information.

Limon had been convicted of stealing of vehicle and fleeing officers on three separate occasions, according to court records.

The Minneapolis theater has unveiled its 29th season, with five productions, as well as the NEXT Festival in the summer of 2027. (Its 2026 NEXT Festival, featuring works-in-progress, will start in July.)

"This season reflects our ongoing commitment to work that is emotionally immediate, theatrically adventurous, and deeply engaged with the world around us," says Justin Lucero, artistic director.

"Whether through laughter, intimacy or confrontation, each piece creates space for empathy and asks audiences to imagine a more expansive future together. This season's productions were chosen not only for their artistry, but for the conversations they invite us to have right now.”

The season commences on Sept. 16 with "Indecent" by Paula Vogel. It's a play about a play, inspired by Sholem Asch's "God of Vengeance" and a 1923 obscenity trial.

Up next is the theater's holiday production of "All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914," written and directed by the theater's co-founder, Peter Rothstein. The musical, based on a true story, is returning to the theater where it originated and played annually for many years.

Latté Da's first performance of 2027 will be the Midwest premiere of "Lizard Boy," an indie rock musical with book, music, and lyrics by Justin Huertas.

Led by a three-piece chamber band, it's a story of self-acceptance centered around a boy with scaly green skin who finds the courage to step out into public in order to save the world. 

That regional debut is followed by the world premiere of "She's Come Undone," a musical commissioned by Theater Latté Da based on the best-selling novel by Wally Lamb. 

The new production comes from the same team that brought "Twelve Angry Men: A New Musical" to the theater in 2022.

The season will wrap up with the Tony-winning musical "Spring Awakening," which will be directed by Lucero and presented in collaboration with the University of Minnesota. 

Subscriptions are available now for renewing subscribers and will open to new subscribers at noon on May 20. Five-show packages start at $175, and four-show packages, which exclude the holiday production, start at $140.

The first crash happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday in Helen Township, with a Chevrolet Silverado traveling northbound on Dairy Avenue colliding with a semi-trailer traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 212.

A lone passenger in the Silverado was killed, while both drivers sustained injuries that aren't believed to be life-threatening.

The name of the victim hasn't yet been released, though she's been identified as an 85-year-old Hutchinson woman.

Just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling north on Minnesota Highway 22 in Greenleaf Township when it left the roadway and rolled, coming to a rest in the ditch.

A 40-year-old Hutchinson woman was killed in the rollover crash. She was the only passenger in the Malibu, whose airbags deployed, but wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

A 39-year-old Litchfield woman was driving the vehicle. The extent of her injuries is currently unknown.

Neither of the women's names have been released.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating both fatal crashes.

Lawrence Alan Randall, 62, is facing one felony count of receiving stolen property. His first court appearance is set for later this month. 

Back in February, Maple Grove Police received a report of a Boy Scout trailer that had been stolen from the parking lot of Maple Grove Lutheran Church on Elm Creek Blvd North. 

The troop leader told authorities the Haulmark trailer was worth about $7,000, contained the group’s camping equipment, and was covered with distinctive Troop 84 markings. 

Criminal charges state a parent with children in the troop told law enforcement that he saw a truck pulling the recognizable trailer on a local highway. Police were able to recover a photo of the truck and trailer from MNDOT cameras. 

Law enforcement later put a plea out for information on social media, and several witnesses came forward, reporting the truck and trailer were parked in Randall’s driveway. 

When officers went to his home, they found the trailer smelling like fresh paint, and noticed the serial number of the plate had been sanded off. 

Prosectors allege Randall stated it was not the trailer they were looking for and that he had had it for about a month and a half, but did not have any paperwork for it. 

He told investigators he doesn’t give a "f*** about the scouts,” and went on to allege he was sexually assaulted when he was a Boy Scout. 

“If they don't go camping, they don't get raped either,” Randall reportedly told officers. 

Later that month, Randall called police and told them he had found the missing camping equipment and dropped the items off at the church. 

According to a GoFundMe page established to help the troop, the trailer was returned badly damaged with missing shelving units and battery and solar panels. The page’s creator writes it will cost thousands to complete those repairs. 

Hennepin County prosecutors charged Rex Allen Basswood, Jr., 36, with second-degree murder on Wednesday. He is currently in custody and was due in court for his first appearance on Thursday. 

Criminal charges state a passerby was walking in the park on Thursday, May 7 just before 10 a.m. when they discovered a dead body in Triangle Park and called 911. 

First responders arrived at the scene and found the man had been stabbed twice in the chest. The victim has not been publicly identified.

The stabbing was caught on a surveillance camera, per prosecutors. The victim was seen entering the park the night before, and early the next morning, Basswood, Jr. is seen walking into the park. He has a conversation with another individual, and then approaches the victim. 

Charges allege Basswood, Jr. is seen on camera making two stabbing motions into the victim’s chest, before quickly walking out of the park as the victim falls to the ground. 

Investigators were able to identify Basswood, Jr. through the video footage. He was also caught on camera at a pizza restaurant and a gentleman’s club before the stabbing.

He was arrested on Monday at his Minneapolis apartment, where detectives recovered clothing seen in the video, and two knives. 

Basswood, Jr. is also suspected in two other non-fatal stabbings that happened the day before the fatal stabbing. In those cases, the victims were slashed in the face.

Chance the Rapper is returning to the Twin Cities for the first time since headlining the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand in 2024.

The Chicago rapper is celebrating the 10th anniversary of "Coloring Book" with a 37-date tour across the U.S. and Canada. On Oct. 6, less than a week before the tour wraps up in Pittsburgh, he'll head to The Armory in Minneapolis.

On each date of the tour, Chacne will be performing his 2016 album in its entirety, along with hits from other records, including 2025's "Star Line."

Other Upper Midwest stops on the tour include an Oct. 2 stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and an Oct. 4 show in Milwaukee.

An artist presale will take place on Tuesday, May 19. (Sign up for the presale here.) Tickets for Chance the Rapper at The Armory will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21.

The City of Edina is the latest municipality currently evaluating expanding the use of drones in public safety operations and when police respond to emergencies. 

Their police officers currently use drones to help find missing people and track down suspects, but a new “Drone as First Responder” program would place drones across the city. The aircrafts would launch and respond to emergency incidents within seconds. 

“The technology provides officers and dispatchers with real-time aerial awareness before personnel arrive on scene, helping improve decision-making, identify potential safety risks and support de-escalation efforts,” a news release details. 

The use of drones in police work is regulated under Minnesota law, so while they can be used in situations like active criminal activity or during an ongoing police investigation, they can’t be used for regular patrolling. 

The City of Minneapolis is looking at a similar pilot program, with city staff telling a council committee that two marked drones would be used – both equipped with police lights, operating out of Fire Station 14 on the city's North Side, per FOX 9.

“Drones offer a promising way to use technology to help respond faster and more efficiently to victims of crime, community members' calls for help, or other emergencies,” a statement from the Office of Community Safety reads.

“We will work alongside community members to consider it carefully and make sure any approach we take aligns with our shared values and priorities around community safety."

The Minnetonka Police Department was the first law enforcement agency in the state to lauch a “Drone As First Responders” program last year.

The department told FOX 9 out of nearly 600 flights, drones were the first to the scene 65% of the time and in 20% of cases, a call was cleared without sending an officer.

Brookyn Park approved a $4.6 million investment in drones for use by its emergency services last November.

Statewide, the average is $4.36 per gallon of regular gas on Thursday, compared to $4.15 per gallon on Wednesday, according to data from AAA.

It was $4.21 per gallon a week ago and $3.72 per gallon a month ago.

In the Twin Cities, the average price of gas shot up even higher, from $4.17 per gallon on Wednesday to $4.45 on Thursday.

Mankato and Rochester saw similar increases over the past 24 hours, with prices now at $4.46 and $4.49, respectively, up from $4.19 and $4.23.

Patrick DeHaan, the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, says the rise is due to "nearby refinery issues that are now improving and the Iran situation pushing oil prices higher."

"I believe this hike was last night – the hike may roll back quicker, however, with refinery issues clearing up and wholesale costs easing," he added.

Nationwide, the average price of regular gas is $4.53 per gallon on Thursday, only slightly more than $4.51 on Wednesday.

The national average saw five straight days of decline this week until it started going up again on Thursday, though it's still a few cents lower than it was last week, per AAA.

Prices have surged about 50% since the start of the Iran war in late February.

President Donald Trump has said he will suspend the federal gas tax, a move that would likely reduce gas prices by 18 cents per gallon.

This would not bring prices down close to what they were before the U.S. and Israel launched military action in Iran.

The deal announced Wednesday night allocates additional funding toward education, infrastructure, technology, and fraud investigations, while leaving some of the state's projected surplus.

“This agreement reflects the disciplined, fiscally responsible approach Minnesotans expect,” Walz said in a statement. “We are keeping a balanced budget, making targeted reductions, and focusing every dollar on core priorities: fiscal sustainability, critical infrastructure, and the health and wellbeing of our communities."

The deal includes $205 million in funding for HCMC, a safety net hospital in downtown Minneapolis that's at risk of closing as early as June, plus a $500 million hospital reserve account to fund it in the future.

Lawmakers initially proposed raising an existing Hennepin County sales tax by 1%, which is currently repaying the debt that helped build Target Field, to generate an estimated $305 million annually for Hennepin Healthcare, the system that operates HCMC.

"At a time of real uncertainty, we are protecting Minnesota’s strong financial position while delivering a historic, bipartisan investment in HCMC, a cornerstone of our health care system and a critical safety net for Minnesotans across the region," Walz continued. "This agreement strengthens Minnesota’s long-term stability, supports the broader health care ecosystem, and reflects the discipline of living within our means while preparing for the challenges ahead.”

House Speaker Lisa Demuth, a Republican candidate for governor, said her caucus "fought all session long for car tab relief, property tax cuts, and meaningful anti-fraud measures."

"This budget delivers that, along with help for rural and critical access hospitals across the state and relief for our counties," Demuth said. "With this budget, we’re delivering on affordability for communities across the state."

The deal is expected to reduce vehicle tab fees for one year, with relief totaling $250 million, and disperse $125 million to homeowners who are struggling with rising property taxes and higher costs.

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy called the deal "a hard-fought negotiation."

"The Senate DFL caucus worked throughout this session to address the affordability crisis, save our healthcare system, invest in community infrastructure and keep food on the table for Minnesotans," Murphy said. "This budget deal models those priorities, though much of it is consumed backfilling costs created by cuts from the federal government, and some of our strongest proposals did not have support across the aisle."

House DFL Leader Zack Stephenson described the negotiation as "a strong step forward on important issues while working in divided government."

Lawmakers still need to the pass the bills affiliated with the budget deal through both chambers before the legislative ends Monday, including a $1.2 billion bonding bill to fund public works projects.

The tied House has yet to vote on a comprehensive gun violence prevention package in response to the Annunciation shooting. It narrowly passed in the Senate earlier in May, with every senator voting on party lines.

Some Democrats plan to stage a sit-in on the House floor Thursday evening if the gun control measures haven't been voted on by then.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday that Cameron Walker, 19, drowned in Little Emily Lake, where he was paddle boarding alongside two women, aged 20 and 22, on Tuesday.

The sheriff's office says that Walker and the two women were attending college in Morris, Minnesota. The 19-year-old's body was found in 23 feet of water around two-and-a-half hours after it was reported he had not returned to shore.

"The sheriff’s office again extends its appreciation to the lake residents and responding
emergency personnel who assisted during the incident," the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office said.

"Please continue to keep the families and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

On the same day, a man was killed and three people were injured in a boat crash on Lake Vermilion.

Boat crash victim identified

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office has identified the man who died in a boat accident on Lake Vermilion on Tuesday evening as 53-year-old Jeremy Brandon Johnson, of Eveleth.

Three others were injured – with one of them airlifted to a hospital – after a crash saw multiple people thrown from boats and into the water near Manbeck Island on the northern lake.

Lifesaving aid was administered to Johnson, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Further details on what caused the crash and how many crafts were involved have not been released.

The eye-catching performers include hip-hop royalty in the Sugarhill Gang, alt-country star Margo Price, '00s radio rockers Vertical Horizon, a tribute to the Minneapolis Sound featuring former members of Prince's New Power Generation, and local indie duo Durry.

It's an appealing lineup with some good music on the fair's stages daily. Though it's "free" and not free, since those stages are only accessible after the price of admission.

The Sugarhill Gang, best known for their pioneering hit "Rapper's Delight," will turn the Bandshell Tonight stage into a beacon of old school hip-hop on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, joined by two members of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five — Melle Mel and Scorpio.

Price is a bit of a welcome surprise for the free-stage lineup, having recently sold out two nights at First Avenue and, before that, appearing for a set at Farm Aid 40. She's also part of the Bandshell Tonight lineup, playing on Aug. 29 and 30.

Typically, that stage features a local act with national recognition for the final two nights of the fair, and that'll be Durry this year.

Fairgoers looking for those gigs won't find them listed at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell. While that was the name for many years, it's now the Luther Auto Bandshell after Leinenkugel's stepped away from the sponsorship following the decision to mostly step away from its historic brewery in Chippewa Falls last year.

That stage will also feature Vertical Horizon on Aug. 27 and 28, as well as the Yacht Rock Revue on Sept. 2 and 3, and Urban Classic's "Revelation: a Retrospective of the Minneapolis Sound" on Sept. 4 and 5.

That latter show features Michael Bland and Tommy Barbarella, former members of the NPG, who will also be performing at the reborn Eaux Claires festival earlier in the summer. Unfortunately for Minneapolis Sound lovers, those gigs don't arrive on the same night that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are headlining the Grandstand with Morris Day and the Time.

The Schilling Amphitheater also has a new sponsor. It's now the Pryes Stage, and the local brewery will pair nicely with its lineup of local talent that includes rapper Nur-D (Aug. 27 and 28), The Honeydogs (Aug. 29 and 30), Anishinaabe songwriter Keith Secola (Aug. 31 and Sept. 1), the alt-folk duo The Cactus Blossoms (Sept. 2 and 3), First Avenue's two-day lineup (yet to be announced), and Maygen & the Birdwatcher (Sept. 6 and 7).

Quinn Hughes' extension

Wild general manager (GM) Bill Guerin pulled off a true blockbuster trade last December to acquire Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Hughes performed like one of the best defensemen in 48 regular-season games and 11 playoff games with Minnesota. The question now becomes whether or not they can sign him to a long-term contract extension. At 28 years old, the 2026-27 season is the final year on his current contract before he's a free agent in the 2027 offseason.

Minnesota just made Kirill Kaprizov the highest-paid player in the NHL, and a long-term extension for Hughes will not come cheaply. Guerin and the Wild front office need to do everything they can to avoid a disaster and get a deal done with Hughes as soon as possible.

Mats Zuccarello highlights impending free agents

Zuccarello is one of four big-time unrestricted free agents for Minnesota this offseason. At 38 years old, he showed that he still has plenty left in the tank with 54 points (13 goals and 39 assists). He will first need to decide if he wants to come back for a 17th season in the NHL, and then whether or not that will be in Minnesota.

Vladimir Tarasenko, Marcus Johansson, Nick Foligno, and Michael McCarron are the other veterans who are free to sign anywhere in the NHL this offseason.

Minnesota's defensive core is set to return, while veterans Zach Bogosian and Jeff Petry are unrestricted free agents.

According to PuckPedia, the Wild are projected to have around $13.5 million in cap space. It's a good bet that Minnesota will have enough money to make an impactful move or two in free agency this summer.

Goalie situation

Six-year veteran Filip Gustavsson played 50 games in the regular season, compared to third-year goalie Jesper Wallstedt, who played just 35. Those numbers switched in the postseason, and Wallstedt played 10 of 11 games between the pipes.

Gustavsson still has four years at $6.8 million annually left on his contract, while Wallstedt is entering the final season of his rookie deal before becoming a restricted free agent in 2027.

Minnesota clearly has two capable goalies, and both are younger than 28 years old. Wallstedt objectively struggled against the Avalanche compared to his performance against the Stars, so it will be interesting to see how the team handles the situation going forward.

Remember, Wallstedt could be used as a significant trade chip if Guerin wants to get aggressive this summer.

John Hynes' future

The 2025-26 season was Hynes' third as the head coach of the Wild. He has improved the regular-season win total every year, and they went from missing the playoffs in his first season to a first-round exit last year, and a trip to the second round this year. That trend makes it seem like he certainly deserves to come back for another season.

Guerin is an aggressive decision-maker, and he knows what it takes to build a championship contender. Hynes was his pick three years ago, and there's no indication that he's ready to pull the plug on him when their Stanley Cup window is wide open.

The Carver County Sheriff’s Office says it received a report of a man in the Minnesota River near the Highway 41 bridge in Chaska just before 5 p.m. 

Deputies, police and fire crews responded to the scene and began a search. Witnesses reported that the man had entered into the water on his own and began swimming. At one point, the man reportedly submerged and did not resurface. 

Despite search efforts using drones, an underwater operated vehicle and a boat equipped with sonar, the man was not located Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office. 

The man is described as Hispanic and standing around 5’7” tall. He was last seen without a shirt and wearing khaki pants.

Search efforts are set to begin again Thursday morning near Winkel Park. Residents are advised to avoid the area, but anyone with information on the man’s location is encouraged to call 911 or the sheriff office’s nonemergency line at (952) 361-1231.

Just 0.2 inches, and the severe weather has been completely void after the second half of April was chock full of tornadoes and hail. But a more active pattern is about to develop, and it could bring thunderous skies and the threat of severe storms.

In fact, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is monitoring Sunday for a severe weather outbreak. Monday could also be stormy in Minnesota if the pattern evolves just right.

"A severe weather outbreak will be possible from the afternoon and evening into the early overnight period," the SPC says of Sunday. "The setup appears favorable for supercells with tornadoes, large to very large hail and wind damage."

The SPC already has an enhanced risk of severe storms in Nebraska, southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota, with a slight risk expanding outwards to include a large area of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities.

An enhanced risk represents level 3 of 5 on the severe scale, and getting a risk that high four days in advance is an indication that widespread severe weather is expected.

On Monday, the SPC has Minnesota in a slight risk, with another enhanced risk in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa.

Notably, SPC's Chris Broyles is behind these advanced forecasts. He's one of the prominent severe weather forecasters in the country, and he specializes spotting big severe weather events days before they occur.

NOAA's Severe Storms Laboratory's machine-learning models are also showing high-end severe potential on Sunday and Monday.

The same goes for the machine-learning models employed at Colorado State University.

According to the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service, the threat on Sunday will be driven by a low-level jet streak. How far north the jet streaks into the Midwest will determine the areas that will be under the gun for the most violent storms.

Monday's threat is greatest south of Minnesota, but if the sun breaks through the clouds early in the day, the instability and thunderstorm juice could increase in Minnesota.

The European model's Sunday lightning density simulation shows storms moving from South Dakota across southern Minnesota early in the day, followed by significant storm development later in the evening.

The RRFS model only currently goes out through 1 p.m. Sunday, but it's showing some leftover rain moving across Minnesota in the morning. In this scenario, it could create a path for a warm front to slide north, and if clearing takes place, watch out for significant storms later in the day.

Details will be refined in the coming days, and we'll have more with Bring Me The News meteorologist Sven Sundgaard in his video forecast later today.

Cordaryle Frank-Allen Frost, of Columbia Heights, has been charged with first-degree assault resulting in great bodily harm and recklessly discharging a firearm toward and occupied vehicle.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. Friday in the area of 53rd Avenue Northeast and University Avenue Northeast in Fridley, with police responding to a report of a woman who had been shot in a vehicle and a 5-year-old child running around asking for help for her mother.

When they arrived, officers found a woman who had been shot in the neck, sitting in a Chevrolet Tahoe off to the side of the road. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical but stable condition.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim was eventually able to tell investigators that she had just left a prom sendoff party in Columbia Heights when her friend's neighbors, Frost and his wife, pulled up in a vehicle beside her on University Avenue and yelled at her to pull over.

The victim said the couple got out of their vehicle and approached her, with the wife threatening to "beat her ass." She drove off quickly to try to get away from them, she said, then the two pulled alongside her driver's side and she heard a gun fire, lost control of her vehicle, and realized she had been shot as she was no longer able to move her arms or legs, or lift her head.

Surveillance video from a business near the friend's house shows that the victim's SUV appears to have made contact with a Chevrolet Blazer parked behind her as she was backing out of a parking space on the street.

Several second after the woman drove away, several people are seen on video approaching the Blazer and briefly inspecting it, then a man matching Frost's description gets in the driver's seat of the SUV while a woman matching his wife's description gets in the passenger seat, followed by the pair taking off at a high rate of speed.

Frost was arrested Monday, along with his wife, who hasn't been charged in the shooting and is no longer in custody.

Frost reportedly acknowledged having a confrontation with the woman over his SUV being struck but denied any involvement in the shooting.

However, his wife told police that she and Frost confronted the woman for hitting his vehicle and that Frost shot at the woman's vehicle but didn't think she was struck, with the complaint noting that she ultimately implicated him.

The victim required surgery to remove bullet fragments and sustained a spinal cord injury, the extent of which isn't currently clear, but it is currently impairing her motor function, per the complaint.

Frost has two prior convictions for being an ineligible person in possession of a firearm, the complaint says.

The 47-movie run begins with "Grease" on June 3 and runs through a Sept. 5 screening of "Rocky" at Bryant Square Park.

As usual, it's a schedule heavy on recently released, family-friendly fare, including a few from this year, such as "Hoppers," "Goat," and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."

Amid the screenings of "Smurfs" and "The Secret Life of Pets" are a handful of movies aimed at older audiences, like "Best in Show," "Sharknado," "Wayne's World," "TRON: Ares," "F1," and "The Fifth Element."

This year's roster is a bit of a scaled-back series, with 66 taking place in 2025 and 70 in 2024.

As has been the case in recent years, it's also heavy on the feeling that the city wants to bring people to downtown Minneapolis.

More than a quarter of the screenings will take place at The Commons. Outside of that U.S. Bank Stadium adjacent space, only one park, Victory Park, is getting more than a single event this year. (In 2025, 14 events were held at The Commons. There were 12 in 2024.)

Minnesota started fast, scoring 34 seconds into the game and holding a 3-0 lead after one period. The Wild played a defensive brand in the second period, and the lack of aggression cost them as Colorado chipped away with one goal in second and then two goals in the final four minutes of the third period.

Jack Drury deflected a puck past Wallstedt with 3:33 to play to make it a one-goal game, and with goalie Scott Wedgewood, who replaced starter Mackenzie Alexander, pulled for an extra skater, the Avs applied a ton of pressure before Nathan MacKinnon sniped a shot over Wallstedt to tie it with 1:23 remaining.

Minnesota had a total of seven shots on goal over the last two periods and overtime.

Kirill Kaprizov, the NHL's highest-paid player, had zero shots in Game 5 after only one shot in Minnesota's loss in Game 4. He just wasn't good enough, and Colorado's winning goal came just seconds after Kaprizov decided not to shoot the puck and instead slid the puck through traffic to Boldy, who couldn't get a shot off, and it turned into a deadly rush for the Avs.

The loss wasted a great start to Game 5, as Marcus Johansson scored just 34 seconds into the first period, burying a one-timer from the slot after Matt Boldy backhanded a pass to him with nobody nearby.

The loss ends the Wild's season in the second round of the playoffs, marking the franchise's deepest postseason run after their last eight trips to the postseason, dating back to 2015, ended in the first round.

The teenager was charged with assault and weapons charges in Beltrami County Court on May 8, which comes after a shooting at an apartment building on the 2500 block of Itasca Loop Northwest in Bemidji on the afternoon of May 7.

Officers and Beltrami County deputies arrived to find three adults with gunshot wounds, and spoke with a woman who said her son had shot her and the boy’s father because he was "irate" they had taken away his cell phone, criminal charges detail. 

Another person was also shot in the parking lot, and is believed to have been a bystander. 

First responders made sure all three victims were stablized at the scene, and they were eventually taken to the Sanford Hospital Emergency Room for further treatment. 

About two hours after the shooting, the boy later turned himself in to authorities, admitting he shot his mom and dad because they revoked his cell phone privileges, the criminal complaint says.

He also told detectives he was able to get the gun without his parents knowing. 

Law enforcement was able to track down the pistol hidden under a pile of leaves near Bemidji Middle School.

Braidy Glen Allen, 38, of Champlin, and Christopher Lee Brandt, 42, of Marshall, have been charged with felony burglary and theft following the incident, which allegedly took place in the early hours of April 17.

The homeowners reported the theft to police later that day, with a woman telling officers that she heard noises when she was sleeping and awoke to discover the back door of the home was wide open, a utility room had been ransacked, and two 1,000-ounce silver bars worth $80,000 were gone.

The victims later followed up with investigators, telling them that four boxes containing nearly two dozen 100-ounce bars were also stolen, bringing the total value of the theft up to $374,000.

According to criminal charges, the victims immediately suspected Allen because he had lived with them for a period of time, and knew the couple had precious metals and where they were stored.

Detectives contacted several large gold and silver dealers across the metro, and discovered that a local business had purchased a silver bar with a serial number matching one of the stolen bars.

Police later executed a search warrant at Allen’s home and discovered chunks of metal, a portable smelting pot, and a milk crate “containing 29 bars of unknown metallic composition,” among other items.

Allen and Brandt were later arrested and booked into the Dakota County Jail, with staff noting that Brandt had a “bluish residue on his hands which may have come from melting down the stolen silver,” per criminal charges.

Both men refused to speak with investigators and were released pending further investigation.

In early May, a witness came forward to police with information about the theft, relaying details of how the two men were able to access the victim’s home.

Brandt reportedly commented the couple was “begging” to get the silver stolen by keeping it in the basement, according to the witness.

The witness agreed to keep the silver at their home for a short period of time, but the precious metals were later moved. They also alleged that Brandt had all of the silver now and said they were afraid of what Allen and Brandt might do to them.

According to KARE 11, Allen fled to Montana following his release, but was arrested there on May 9. He was released on bail two days later. 

Brandt still has not been located, and a nationwide warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Travis William Lester, 40, of Circle Pines, pleaded guilty in April to two counts of attempted second-degree murder. He was sentenced late last week to 135 months and 15 days, with credit for 245 days already served in jail.

On Sept. 5, officers arrived to a home on the on the 7100 block of 120th Avenue in Champlin to find a man and woman covered in blood, with the man saying their son, Lester, had stabbed them in a "drug-induced rage."

Both victims had multiple stab wounds, including to the chest and neck, and were transported to a hospital in critical condition, where they were intubated for at least three days, according to a criminal complaint.

Officers found a bloody knife under a kitchen table and blood throughout the inside and outside of the house.

The stabbing sparked a shelter-in-place order as police searched for Lester. He ultimately was arrested about three hours later during a traffic stop in Lino Lakes.

Officers reportedly found a large kitchen knife and what appeared to be methamphetamine inside Lester's vehicle.

Lester admitted to stabbing his parents, telling officers that he had been "thinking about doing it for 'a day or two' but didn't want to," per the complaint.

Before entering his plea in April, Lester sent from jail a handwritten motion to dismiss the charges, arguing that his constitutional rights were violated by holding him on $1 million bail until he was proven guilty.

"This case is in fact a perfect display of cruel and unusual punishment that were inflicted against me for this offense," reads the letter, which goes on to call excessive bail "an abomination of the law."

Lester will serve his sentence at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud.

The brewery will expand its patio across the parking lot next to its space in the Solar Arts Building. It'll be an incremental rollout, chief business officer Ryan Bandy tells Bring Me The News. Eventually, Indeed plans to add permanent structures, including an open shipping container with windows and seats.

The patio extension will add around 100 seats, according to public documents. The current patio accommodates around 188 patrons during the warmer months.

Indeed has previously used the full lot for parties and concerts, such as during its annual Whirlygig music festival during Art-A-Whirl.

"The goal was always to turn that whole area into a patio like it is during our parties," says Bandy, who adds that the incremental plan will lead to bigger work beginning in the fall.

Its final form is planned to open next spring. That will include a structure to protect customers from rain, as well as plants, more lighting, and tables made from recycled plastic. The goal is to have something that fits the neighborhood and the brewery's identity.

"We're trying to thread the needle of old and new, while also still feeling modern and comfortable. Not just old for old's sake," Bandy says, "but using materials and spacing in a way that makes it feel like if you show up in five years from now and you've never been there before, you might think that structure has been there for 50 years."

In the narrow, year-round patio area that currently exists, the brewery puts out heaters in the winter. Indeed is considering expanding that with the final build to "extend the season" with fire pits and wind breaks.

Hennepin County court records show Kevin Mullen, 43, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, with several felony charges dropped in exchange for the plea. Mullen was sentenced to probation and was also is ordered to perform 90 hours of community service. 

A criminal complaint alleged Mullen failed to file or pay income tax returns from 2019 to 2023. In 2017, Mullen reportedly told Department of Revenue staff members he was in the midst of filing multiple late returns dating back as far as 2008.

Through his returns, a state tax specialist determined that Mullen’s taxable income ranged from a low of $181,658 in 2019 to a high of $2,404,609 in 2022 during those years, with Mullen involved in a number of high-profile residential sales.

Real estate records reviewed by the Minnesota Star Tribune also show that Mullen closed sales totaling as much as $38.3 million in 2023, including high-profile downtown Minneapolis deals.

Investigators spoke with Mullen in 2024, who acknowledged not filing tax returns, saying he needed to "hit this thing completely head-on" and “administratively ... get organized and get back on track,” according to the complaint. 

Bring Me The News reached out to Mullen’s attorney, Tom Brever, who said Mullen’s guilty plea "recognizes (his) acceptance of his error and his desire to return to being in full compliance with the law"

He added Mullen liquidated personal assets and paid all of the tax and interest due on those returns. 

Mullen's website shows he currently has several active lisitng across the state, including a $2.6 million home in Wayzata.

This week, Journey added 40 dates to the tour, including an Oct. 4 show at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.

Band members have suggested this lengthy trek will be the final tour with the band as currently constructed. In the fall, Neal Schon told Rolling Stone that keyboardist Jonathan Cain planned to leave at the end of the tour.

"I can’t really speculate at this point. I’m kind of ready to move on," Schon said. "For one, there’s so many tribute bands out there right now playing whatever show we do. That’s why I’m really glad that we’re going to change things up here and throw in a lot of loops that people don’t expect because there’s so many tribute bands out there doing exactly the same show we’re doing."

Adding to that speculation is the tour's "an evening with Journey"-style set-up, with the band playing two full sets with an intermission in the middle.

The band formed in 1973 but found its next-level popularity after vocalist Steve Perry joined in 1977, starting a cascade of hit songs like "Any Way You Want It," "Who's Crying Now," "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," and "Don't Stop Believin'."

After parting ways in 1987, they reunited in the mid-'90s, but Perry only stuck around for a few years. After a stint with Steve Augeri as the vocalist, Journey hired Filipino singer Arnel Pineda, who can elicit Perry's unique vocal delivery with impressive precision, in 2007.

They've continued to tour almost constantly, playing most of Minnesota's biggest venues, including Target Field and the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand.

In addition to St. Paul, the tour will make Upper Midwest stops in Grand Forks, N.D. (Oct. 2); Chicago (Oct. 5), Detroit (Nov. 2), and Cleveland (Nov. 12). The previously announced leg of the tour includes dates in Champaign, Ill. (June 20); Green Bay, Wis. (June 21); Moline, Ill. (June 24); and Des Moines (July 7).

Tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 15, with a Citi cardholder presale taking place on Wednesday, May 13.

Gary Schroeder Jr. was a longtime police officer and firefighter in Zumbrota before medically retiring at the end of 2020, according to the city’s website. After a long battle with PTSD caused by his years of service, he died by suicide in 2023. 

Schroeder Jr’s family reported the boat stolen from the Pioneer Campground outside Wabasha over the weekend. According to the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, the boat was taken between Sunday, May 3 and Saturday, May 9.

“(The boat) was padlocked that would have had to have been cut off to haul it,” wrote Schroeder Jr’s widow, Kim, on social media. “When it was stolen it had the canvas cover on it.  A lot of memories for the kids and their dad in the boat.  Help us get it home.”

The passing of Schroeder Jr. rocked the tight-knit community of Zumbrota, where the city council unanimously voted in 2024 to declare April 17th "Gary Schroeder Jr. Memorial Day."

To further honor his memory and contributions to the city, the Officer Gary Schroeder Jr. PTSD / Suicide Awareness Memorial was built outside the city’s police station. The monument was unveiled last summer.

Mayo Clinic announced Tuesday that Dr. Gianrico Farrugia is stepping down as president and CEO at the end of this year.

Farrugia has led the Rochester-based system since 2019 but has worked as a physician with Mayo for more than 35 years. He previously served as CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida.

"I’m tremendously proud of how Mayo Clinic has advanced our patient-centered mission and set the standard for exceptional healthcare over the last eight years," Farrugia said in a statement. "Serving as president and CEO has been a true privilege, and I am certain that our momentum will continue — driven as always by the commitment of our staff to discover new cures and provide more hope and healing to more patients."

An email to employees indicates that Farrugia plans to continue working at Mayo as a gastroenterologist, according to MPR News.

His tenure is consistent with the amount of time that a CEO typically stays on at Mayo.

Mayo has been ranked by Newsweek as the world's best hospital for eight consecutive years. It also posted a record profit of $1.5 billion in 2025.

Richard Davis, chair of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees, credits Farrugia with helping to position the system "at the forefront of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape."

"His leadership has strengthened our ability to innovate, collaborate and meet the evolving needs of patients around the world," Davis said in a statement. "We are grateful for his contributions and confident that Mayo Clinic is prepared to continue delivering excellence to those we serve and lead the future of healthcare."

Mayo's next president and CEO will be elected by the board of trustees in November and will officially take over in January.

That tour, which starts on Sept. 1 at the O2 in London, will have the quintet making its Target Center debut on Nov. 7. The trek is in support of the Los Angeles-based group's upcoming third EP, "Wild," which will be out on Aug. 14.

Tickets go on sale on May 21, just a few days before Katseye will perform at the American Music Awards in Las Vegas. They've been nominated for new artist of the year, best music video ("Gnarly"), and breakthrough pop artist. (They were also nominated for best new artist and best pop duo/group performance at the Grammys.)

Those nominations drive home just how fast their ascension has been.

Katseye debuted in June 2024 and just months later drew around 8,000 fans to a pop-up show at the Mall of America. They embarked on their first full tour, which started in Minneapolis at The Armory, in late 2025. Now, they've graduated to one of Minnesota's largest concert venues.

For fans that can't wait until the fall, they're also one of this summer's headliners at the Hinterland music festival in St. Charles, Iowa, along with Lorde, Mumford & Sons, and Kali Uchis.

A Weverse artist presale for Katseye's show at the Target Center will take place at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, with a Katseye.World presale at 3 p.m. that same day. Tickets go on sale to the public at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 21.

This game was all about balanced scoring for the Lynx (1-1), who shot 50 percent from the field and got 11-14 points from all five of their starters (Olivia Miles, Courtney Williams, Kayla McBride, Nia Coffey, Natasha Howard) and from Emma Cechova off the bench. Antonia Delaere also chipped in eight. Of those seven players, only Williams and McBride were on last year's team.

The Mercury (1-2) got 30 points from Kahleah Copper but only 26 points on 26 shots from Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner combined. Phoenix shot 37 percent.

Coffey delivers the dagger

The biggest shot of the night came from Coffey, as the Hopkins native laced a three-pointer with less than 30 seconds on the clock to push Minnesota's lead from one point to four. Miles provided the assist.

That was just the finishing touch on an outstanding closing stretch from Coffey, who was limited to 21 minutes in this game due to foul trouble. She hit a three with a little under four minutes left to pull the Lynx within a point. She also put her team in front with a layup a couple minutes later.

Coffey had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and a block after checking into the game with around seven minutes left in the fourth. The ten-year veteran, playing for her hometown team for the first time, finished with 13 points and 10 boards despite her foul trouble.

Miles impresses again

Miles, the Lynx's No. 2 overall pick, also dealt with some foul trouble in this game, which limited her to 26 minutes. But when she was on the floor, she looked outstanding for the second straight game to begin her WNBA career. Miles put up 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists on the night (with only two turnovers). Four of her assists came in the fourth quarter, punctuated by the pass to Coffey for the dagger.

Miles, who dropped 21 points and 8 assists in her debut on Saturday, has 34 points and 15 assists through two games. She's the first player in the league history with at least 30 points and 15 dimes in their first two games (though Candace Parker deserves a shoutout for having 46 and 14).

Only two WNBA players have ever had more than 15 assists in their first two games: Suzie McConnell Serio in 1998 and Shoni Schimmel in 2014.

Through two games, Miles has looked like a future star and the favorite to be the WNBA's rookie of the year in 2026. She isn't afraid to talk a little trash to an all-time great, either.

The Lynx's next game is a fun one. Miles and company are headed to Dallas to play Paige Bueckers and this year's No. 1 pick, Azzi Fudd, on Thursday night. It'll be televised on Prime Video.

A Douglas County Circuit Court Judge sentenced Jeffrey Anthony Charles, 65, to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Tuesday. 

According to the Wisconsin Attorney General’s Office, Charles served as the pastor for Neighbors to Nations church in Princeton.

The abuse occurred from 2005 to 2010 at Charles’ cabin in Summit, Wis., and began when the victim was just 3 years old. 

“The victim is to be commended for the patience and bravery she demonstrated testifying about these crimes to a jury,” said District Attorney Mark Fruehauf in a statement.

In 1997, Charles was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse in Iowa.

Abdidwahid Mohamed, 60, was charged last Wednesday with trafficking SNAP benefits, a felony that carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and $100,000 fine.

The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides monthly food benefits to low-income families through an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which functions like a debit card at authorized retailers.

According to a criminal complaint, Mohamed used EBT cards that aren't his to purchase items from retailers like Sam's Club and Costco, then brought them directly to his now-closed store, Minnesota Food Grocery on West Lake Street, where employees unloaded the items and put them on shelves.

On one occasion, surveillance footage allegedly showed Mohamed purchase more than $780 in energy drinks, candy bars, and soda at Costco in June 2021, using an EBT card registered to a woman who left the U.S. several months earlier with her children, all of whom had not returned.

In August 2021, federal and local law enforcement executed search warrants at Minnesota Food Grocery, and arrested Mohamed at a Sam's Club that he frequented in Bloomington.

At the time of his arrest, Mohamed had another person's EBT card on him, as well as its pin written on a Minnesota Food Grocery receipt, police say.

As part of the investigation, agents with the FBI and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension attempted to interview more than two dozen people whose EBT cards were purportedly used by Mohamed, many of whom claimed that their cards were temporarily lost.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security determined that some of those people were out of the country when their EBT cards were being used by Mohamed, per the complaint.

One woman allegedly told investigators that she had not paid for groceries at Mohamed's store for over a year after allowing him to use her EBT card.

In total, Mohamed is accused of receiving more than $1.1 million in EBT payments between March 2021 and June 2021.

On Monday, members of the Senate voted 34-33 along party lines on the bill, which would prohibit ICE agents from wearing face masks and entering "sensitive" places without a warrant, including schools, courthouses and hospitals.

The legislation also establishes grounds for Minnesotans to sue over violations of constitutional and civil rights by ICE and sets a requirement for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate killings by agents in the state.

It's a response to Operation Metro Surge, a 12-week federal immigration effort that saw two Minneapolis residents killed, a third shot and injured, and countless others detained throughout Minnesota.

Sen. Ron Latz (D-St. Louis Park) is a chief author of the Senate bill, which "provides critical safeguards and protections for the people of Minnesota," as well as "strong accountability measures that will let people get justice for the abuse they endured," he said in a statement.

“Minnesotans have endured unprecedented abuse, violence, and chaos from federal agents ignoring state and federal law throughout Operation Metro Surge, and these agents must be held accountable for their conduct,” Latz said.

Another provision, authored by Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (D-St. Paul), establishes a right of action if federal agents fail to render aid, like they're accused of doing in the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

"As a nurse, I cannot fathom how the agents who shot Renee and Alex refused to provide care and denied the bystanders who pleaded for the opportunity to help," Murphy said in a statement.

"The lack of civility and care those agents showed to Minnesotans and their rights comes from the top down, from (Donald) Trump, Kristi Noem and Greg Bovino. The House should take up this legislation and tell Minnesotans they’re on our side against this lawless, destructive federal action.”

Republicans in both the House and Senate have refused to get on board with statewide ICE regulations, with some arguing that the federal government would sue the state, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

House Speaker Lisa Demuth (R-Cold Spring), who's running for governor, has refused to share any criticism of federal agents during Operation Metro Surge and claimed that many of the stories she's heard were based on hearsay.

The legislative session ends on Monday.

During his long-running Morning Show on Wednesday, Ryan announced that May 22 will be his last day at the station, saying he "could not have imagined a more incredible experience."

Since joining KDWB in June 1993, Ryan has become one of the most distinct voices in morning radio. He will be inducted into the Minnesota Broadcasters Hall of Fame this November.

Ryan secured his most recent contract extension in 2023 as after 30 years at the station.

The Dave Ryan in the Morning Show airs weekdays from 5:30-10 a.m. in the Twin Cities on 101.3, with Ryan hosting alongside Jenny Luttenberger, Bailey Hess, and Vont Leak.

Ryan is expected to transition to an ambassador role and remain involved in KDWB.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says the crash was reported near Manbeck Island at 6:22 p.m., and resulted in "numerous people being thrown from boats and into the water."

Three people were taken by ambulance from the scene, with one of them later airlifted to a hospital in Duluth.

Another person was pronounced dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts by responders.

"The cause of the accident remains under investigation and the name of the deceased party is being withheld, pending family notification," the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office has not said how many boats were involved in the crash.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office said the 19-year-old man called 911 around 12:30 p.m. to report that the boat on Little Emily Lake had capsized and that he and two women were in the water.

The call suddenly disconnected and when authorities arrived they located the two women, ages 20 and 22, and learned the man had not made it to shore.

A rescue effort was launched and the man's body was recovered from the water shortly before 3 p.m.

The sheriff's office said those involved in the incident were college students visiting the area.

"Several lake residents also assisted with rescue efforts, and the Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation for their timely and helpful response," the agency wrote. "Please keep the families of all involved in your prayers as they go through this very difficult traumatic time."

Montreal struck in the first period on a goal from Catherine Dubois, but the Frost answered at 8:15 of the second period when Samantha Cogan scored her first goal of the playoffs.

The Frost finished with 26 shots on goal compared to 17 for Montreal, but Victoire goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens was rock-solid, finishing with 25 saves, including a final flurry from Minnesota as time ticked down in the waning moments of the third period.

The Northeast Minneapolis arts festival can be overwhelming, with more than 1,600 artists showcasing work at more than 100 spots, to say nothing of the heap of concerts, live performances, and food options.

For first-timers, the sprawl can be a turn-off, but that's also what makes it manageable. There's not a single place you have to go. Activities and events are spread out across district, and there delightful things happening around every corner, from collage stations to free portrait sessions, puppet shows to making art with dogs.

It's often easiest to head to one of the large buildings with dozens of artist studios that serve as unofficial outposts of activity, like the Northrup King Building, Casket Arts, California Building, and Q.arma, to name just a few. Though, breweries and distilleries are hosting day-long concerts and can be a solid home base for the day.

But don't overlook the smaller shops that become hubs for the weekend, like Turbo Tim's with its puppet shows and "car crush," free dyeing at Stanley's NE Barroom, or free ballet classes at the Minnesota Dance Theatre

Here's what you need to know to make the most out of the fest.

When is Art-A-Whirl

Art-A-Whirl is decentralized, with events, exhibitions, and concerts spread across Northeast Minneapolis. Officially, it takes place from 5–10 p.m. on Friday, May 15; noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 16; and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 17.

How to get to Art-A-Whirl

Sure, parking is rough, and there's a lot of traffic. But you can skirt some of that by snagging a free ride to Art-A-Whirl through Metro Transit, which has many lines running through Northeast Minneapolis.

If you're driving, it's worth noting that there are road closures, including along Quincy Street. (See the details here.)

Once you're there, free trolleys and accessible shuttles are running between 13 locations. The Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA) says six trolleys will run on Friday and Sunday, and eight will be in operation on Saturday.

The historic movie venue in the heart of the Red River Valley doesn't yet have a timeline for reopening, but its so far survived every challenge its faced since opening back in 1954.

"Damn wind," Sky-Vu's website reads.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph were in the forecast Tuesday, with National Weather Service even issuing a rare blowing dust advisory during the afternoon for several counties across southern and west-central Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) said the individual "may have briefly been exposed overseas to someone who was on board the MV Hondius cruise and tested positive for the hantavirus (Andes virus)."

"We want to emphasize that the risk to the public remains very low," the agency wrote in a statement, noting the person being monitored daily for symptoms is "very cooperative" and doesn't currently show signs of illness.

"Hantavirus has been in the news a lot lately, and we understand that news of a person being monitored in Minnesota may raise concerns," the agency shared. "We are working closely with our partners in local public health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and healthcare."

Additional information about the person in Minnesota is being withheld to protect their privacy, according to MDH.

As of Monday, all passengers on the cruise ship affected by the deadly outbreak had been evacuated and flown to various countries to enter quarantine.

A total of 11 cases, either confirmed or probable, have been reported, as well as three deaths.

"Hantaviruses are a known group of viruses carried by rodents which can spread to people and make them very sick," MDH shared.

The agency continued: "The Andes virus is the only type of hantavirus known to spread from person to person; however, person-to-person spread is usually limited to people who have close contact with an infected person with symptoms."

One major concern related to the outbreak is the long incubation associated with hantavirus, with symptoms sometimes appearing weeks after exposure.

Currently, 18 Americans that were on the cruise ship are in quarantine at medical centers in Nebraska and Atlanta as health officials warn the number of cases could grow.

The MV Hondius left Argentina on April 1 and the first death from hantavirus happened onboard on April 11.

Students are entering the workforce in a difficult situation, with the most recent job report showing wage growth at its slowest since 2021, shorter average work weeks (meaning less income), and unemployment hovering around 4.3%. 

With that in mind, a new report from Redfin and Glassdoor looked at the best metro areas in the U.S. for recent grads. Given that the health care industry was among the stronger sectors in the new jobs report, it's perhaps not surprising that Rochester, Minn., ranked among the best small cities for new graduates. 

The report highlights strong starting salaries and the city's bustling culture as part of the reason Rochester placed 10th on the list. 

The ranking was built through compiling data such as starter home availability, ownership cost, rent-to-income ratio, early-career income averages, economic diversity, overall job satisfaction, job availability, and quality of life metrics.

Todd DuPont and Tom Hutsell opened the Mainstreet restaurant, then called Big 10, in 1996. The business was among the first to arrive downtown in an era of major redevelopment.

The restaurant underwent a revamp and reopened as Thirty Bales in 2018, offering a large menu focused on Midwestern cuisine such as walleye sandwiches and burgers.

"We look forward to what the future brings, but we close this chapter with full hearts and immense pride in the rich history we've shared with Hopkins and our surrounding cities," Todd DuPont and Tom Hutsell shared in a letter announcing the closure. "Thank you for thirty wonderful years."

In an interview with the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, DuPont cited the COVID pandemic, major construction, increased competition and Operation Metro Surge among the challenges that led to the restaurant's closure.

Several longtime Minnesota restaurants have called it quits this month, including Grandma's Saloon & Grill in Duluth's Miller Hill area.

St. Paul Vietnamese restaurant Tay Ho is shutting down after 21 years and the Downtowner Woodfire Grill, also in the capitol city, will end its 38-year run Sunday.

Niall Horan will kick off his just-announced North American tour at Grand Casino Arena on March 17, 2027, his first Twin Cities concert since stopping at the same arena back in 2024.

The singer and "The Voice" judge will launch the 2027 tour in support of his fourth solo album, "Dinner Party," which will be released in June. The trek starts on St. Patrick's Day in St. Paul and runs through a May 29 gig in Vancouver. 

It's the third member of the "X-Factor"-formed boy band to put a show on the calendar over the space of less than a year.

Horan's former bandmate, Louis Tomlinson, has a show scheduled for June 25 at The Armory. Meanwhile, Zayn Malik had also planned a concert at Grand Casino Arena, but canceled the show earlier this month.

Tickets for Horan's show at Grand Casino Arena will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 15, with an artist presale on May 13. Prices have not yet been revealed, but an announcement says there will be VIP ticket options as well.
