The Minnesota Department of Transportation said that all lanes of the northbound interstate closed at 106th Street, and confirmed it had reopened at 8:10 p.m.

This was the situation after the crash, with traffic cameras showing at least two vehicles damaged following an apparent collision, with multiple first responders at the scene.

MnDOT says the 106th Street ramp to northbound I-35W was also closed.

There is no word on injuries at this time.

Earlier footage from the aftermath of the crash shows one of the vehicles engulfed in flames, with the MnDOT footage below shared by MN Crime.

Bloomington-based DQ revealed its partnership with Silicon Valley-based automation company Presto this month, announcing that it's expanding its use of AI to select franchised locations after testing the technology at corporate-owned DQs.

In a press release, Kevin Baartman, DQ's executive vice president of information technology, called Presto an "excellent partner" and said the initial results of using the company's AI "look quite promising."

Presto told the Wall Street Journal that its AI chatbots are taking orders accurately about 90% of the time, a figure it says is more accurate than the human order takers.

Baartman said AI can enable employees to "focus on high-value tasks" that ultimately benefit customers, with a friendly experience and high order accuracy.

"We’re committed to delivering an exceptional experience to our Fans and our staff, and we believe Presto can help us delight them even more," he stated.

Krishna Gupta, the chief executive officer of Presto, said the company's share "an ambitious joint AI vision."

"We’ve been thrilled to partner closely with their team to optimize the last mile of AI deployment, including complex menu integrations, friendly voices, and a smooth human-AI waltz that just works,” Gupta said in a statement.

A list of locations where the AI order takers are in operation has not been released.

The updated timeline means Collier — as expected — will miss the start of the Lynx's season, which is set to tip off May 10 against the Atlanta Dream.

"Collier underwent successful surgery on her left ankle on March 24," the Lynx stated in an update on the team's website. "Her rehabilitation is progressing as expected, and the current timeline for a return to on-court activities is early June. Further updates on Collier’s progress will be provided when available."

All things considered, this isn't the worst update. It was no secret that Collier was going to miss a good amount of time to begin the season. If she can return to games by mid-to-late June, she'll still be able to play in well over half of Minnesota's 44 regular season contests.

The five-time All Star was injured late in the Lynx's Game 3 loss to the Phoenix Mercury in the semifinals of last season's WNBA Playoffs. The injury happened when Collier banged knees with Mercury star Alyssa Thomas at the end of a physical game. The play didn't warrant a foul call, which drew the ire of head coach Cheryl Reeve, who had to be restrained from the referees after the play.

Collier missed Game 4 of the series, which saw Minnesota get eliminated from the playoffs. She ended the 2025 season with a press conference in which she blasted the leadership of the WNBA.

Earlier this month, Collier and the Lynx agreed to a one-year "supermax" contract, which will pay her $1.4 million for the 2026 season. She explained that her decision to sign only a one-year deal was based on her focusing on recovering from her injury and "winning a championship" this year.

For the Lynx, the loss of Collier early in the season will surely be felt. Collier led the team in points (22.9) and rebounds (7.3), while averaging the second-most steals (1.6) and third-most assists (3.2) per game last season. She has finished runner-up in the MVP voting each of the past two seasons. Collier was named the 2024 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Minnesota's season will begin on May 10, and they will play eight of their 44 games in the month of May.

The Minnesota-based nonprofit's lobbying arm, Save the Boundary Waters Action Fund, announced Tuesday that it's backing Democrat Trina Swanson in the 8th Congressional District race.

While the nonprofit's pressure group's endorsement of a Democratic candidate should come as no surprise, the announcement comes a week after the U.S. Senate voted to repeal mining protections from more than 225,000 acres of land near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The push to scrap the Biden-era mining moratorium, paving the way for Twin Metals – a subsidiary of Chilean mining giant Antofagasta – to construct a sulfide-ore copper mine near the wilderness, was led by Republican Stauber.

Environmental advocates vehemently oppose mining near the Boundary Waters watershed, arguing that it will pollute the pristine waters along the border between Minnesota and Canada and threaten outdoor tourism.

Swanson, an immigration lawyer, has pledged to join the fight to protect the Boundary Waters if she's elected to the seat that Stauber has held since 2018.

“We cannot risk this unique and precious place. We should invest in conservation that supports local jobs and keeps the clean-water economy strong," Swanson said in a statement.

"Protecting the BWCA is not about choosing scenery over livelihoods. It is about protecting the resource so many livelihoods depend on and making sure it is still here for the next generation. The Boundary Waters is something we pass on, not gamble away."

An estimated 70% of Minnesotans support permanent protection of the Boundary Waters watershed, the nonprofit claims, alleging that 56% of the the 8th Congressional District also opposes copper mining near the Iron Range's crown jewel.

“Trina Swanson knows that most voters in Congressional District 8 oppose sulfide-ore copper mining near the Boundary Waters—and if elected, she’ll work to permanently protect its watershed," said Amanda Hefner, director of Save the Boundary Waters Action Fund.

"Protecting the Boundary Waters isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s also smart politics. It safeguards a resource that livelihoods across the Arrowhead depend on. We look forward to working with her in Congress to pass federal legislation preserving this Wilderness for generations to come."

After last week's Senate vote, another Democrat who recently launched a campaign against Stauber lambasted the Republican, claiming he was pandering to Twin Metals over its proposed complex just outside Ely on Birch Lake.

"I'm a proud, pro-mining Democrat but it is clear that this legislation isn't about helping workers in Northern Minnesota," Luke Gulbranson, a reality TV star from Eveleth, said in a statement Thursday.

"Pete Stauber is working overtime to enrich a Chilean mining conglomerate that's going to send our precious natural resources to China. It makes no sense that we can’t keep more of our minerals and more of our energy here at home. Northern Minnesota deserves a better deal than the one Pete Stauber is offering.”

Save the Boundary Waters has endorsed U.S. Reps. Kelly Morrison, Betty McCollum, Ilhan Omar, and Heather Keeler in other Minnesota congressional races.

At a press conference Tuesday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other local officials spoke about how the city is responding to community safety issues in Uptown.

"We’ve made progress with stronger patrols and better coordination, but there’s more to do," Frey said in a statement. "That’s why we’re stepping up visible safety efforts, working with urgency, and pairing compassion with accountability to make Uptown safe and welcoming.”

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said crime and quality of life issues in the area have evolved over the last several years and there's been an uptick in loitering, open air drug activity, theft, and other disturbances.

O'Hara said officers on the street have made a deliberate operational shift recently in response, with a dedicated patrol unit now responding to calls in the area and working to address livability issues.

Narcotics complaints have "decreased dramatically" this month, he said, and fewer people are repeating unwanted behavior as officers more often utilize trespassing citations.

The efforts of the new patrol unit have led to 120 misdemeanor trespassing citations and 60 arrests, many involving outstanding warrants, since March 1, according to the city.

"The community has been asking and now the city is delivering," said Ward 7 Council Member Elizabeth Shaffer, noting the city's approach utilizes both public health and law enforcement perspectives to work towards a common goal.

Highlighting the impacts that safety concerns are having on local residents, Shaffer said one mother told her she stopped bringing her child to Walker Library as they'd have to navigate through groups of people openly using drugs on the street.

"True compassion comes with boundaries," she continued. "Meeting people where they are at does not mean anything goes and we are working to get this balance right."

City leaders believe community safety ambassadors will help in striking that balance in Uptown.

The ambassadors, who don't carry weapons or act as law enforcement, began work last summer along Lake Street and Franklin Avenue under a pilot program that's received positive reception from the majority of residents, according to a city survey.

Beginning Nov. 8, as many as eight ambassadors will be added to the Uptown neighborhood as part of an expansion to the program.

A dedicated dispatcher will also be brought in to field calls from community members seeking services from the ambassadors, such as safety escorts, wellness checks, first aid, Narcan and more.

But a safety ambassador program has been mooted for Uptown since 2023, and $300,000 was earmarked for Uptown as part of the wider safety ambassador program included in the 2024 budget by Minneapolis City Council, having being pushed by Ward 10 Council Member Aisha Chughtai and-then Ward 7 Council Member Katie Cashman.

Southwest Voices reports that Chughtai provided an update to constituents earlier this month in which she said the Uptown ambassador project had been "delayed by multiple years or all together stalled" at city department level, that is, until the announcement this past week.

Cashman told the Southwest Voices that while in office, she regularly pressured the Office of Community Safety, led by commissioner Toddrick Barnette, to launch the pilot in Uptown, with no success.

Minneapolis' neighborhood safety team is hosting a series of feedback sessions to hear from the community about safety in Uptown. The first session will be held Thursday, April 23 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Walker Library.

Here are three thoughts as the series shifts to St. Paul for Game 3 on Wednesday.

1. Wild have to keep their emotions in check

It's a difficult ask in any NHL playoff series, especially a rivalry matchup like this one, but the Wild have to find a way to better rein in their emotions moving forward. They can't let frustration get the best of them and commit careless plays that lead to Dallas power plays, like Marcus Foligno's double minor for roughing Thomas Harley at the end of the second period. Foligno was interfered with, but his response — tackling Harley to the ice by his head — was an ill-advised, dangerous one that arguably could've gotten him even more than four minutes in the box.

"They're looking to play five-on-four," Foligno said, via Michael Russo. "I mean, that's their game. They can't hang with us five-on-five. So just same thing as before, we gotta just be smarter, and myself included. But it's a heated game out there. You're gonna have emotional swings, and learn from it. And we got a split series."

Foligno, who got a game misconduct early in the Wild's Game 5 loss to the Stars in 2023, knows what Dallas wants to do. Now he and his teammates need to heed that advice and be smart. Power-play goals were a killer in 2023, when Dallas had nine in six games, and they were again part of the issue on Monday. An elbowing call from Nick Foligno helped the Stars take a 2-1 lead in the second. Marcus Foligno's penalty didn't lead to a goal, but it put the Wild on their heels to start the third period.

Emotions and intensity run high in the playoffs. These two teams, in particular, do not like each other at all. The Wild also have a reason to be ticked off by borderline "dirty" play after Tyler Myers' elbow on Mats Zuccarello in Game 1 resulted in Zuccarello missing Monday's game. But for the Wild to have success the rest of the way, they have to keep their composure and stay out of the penalty box as much as possible.

2. Brock Faber is a weapon

The Wild hung around on Monday and gave themselves a chance because Faber, their 23-year-old budding star defenseman, had one of the best games of his life. His play is a major reason why Minnesota should feel optimistic heading into Game 3.

Faber made an incredible, aggressive drive to the net and finished off a great Wild passing sequence with a goal to tie it at 1-1 in the first period. It was his first career postseason goal in his 14th game. He then cut the Wild's deficit to 3-2 midway through the third period by pouncing on a loose puck in the slot and firing a shot past Jake Oettinger.

Faber joined Jared Spurgeon (twice) as just the second Wild defenseman with a multi-goal game in the playoffs. He's the first D-man under the age of 24 with a multi-goal playoff game since Cale Makar in 2022. Faber also had an assist in Game 1 in Dallas, and if he continues to generate chances alongside Quinn Hughes, the Wild should have a good shot to put up the goals they need in the rest of this series.

3. There should be no doubt about the goalie decision

There are a couple moments in Game 2 that Jesper Wallstedt would like to have back. Chief among them is the Stars' first goal, in which he tried to glove a puck that had caromed off the boards behind him and accidentally knocked it into the net instead.

Still, even after three goals got past Wallstedt, there should be no goalie decision for the Wild ahead of Game 3. He has absolutely played well enough to remain in net. Wallstedt made 27 and 28 saves in the two games in Dallas, and there wasn't much he could've done on the Stars' second and third goals on Monday. One came on a centering pass to an open player right in front of the net, and the other was a skillful deflection.

John Hynes and the Wild need to stick with Wallstedt until they have a real reason to make a change. Going back to Filip Gustavsson now would be an overreactive mistake that could do significant damage to their chances.

Jakob Dylan Mohr, 24, of Waite Park, is facing multiple charges including first-degree attempted murder and violating a restraining order following the shooting in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The criminal complaint claims that Mohr began following a pickup truck driven by a man and carrying Mohr's ex-girlfriend as the passenger at around 1:45 a.m. Sunday near the Crossroads Center mall, tailing them onto Highway 15.

The male victim says Mohr was driving aggressively to stay close to his truck, and pulled off Highway 15 in Sartell in an attempt to shake Mohr's tail.

At that point, Mohr allegedly pulled alongside the truck and began shooting, firing four bullets, one of which struck the man in the leg.

The complaint says three bullet holes were found on the vehicle, two in the front driver's side door and one in the rear driver's side door, while the driver's window was also shattered.

The suspect vehicle was later found outside a bar in Sauk Rapids, but Mohr was not found with it. He later turned himself in to police in Sartell, arriving at the station with his mother.

Mohr's ex told police she had broke up with the 24-year-old and obtained a harassment order against him in January 2025 because of "assaultive or threatening behavior," the complaint says.

A few hours before the shooting incident, Mohr's ex said she had been at the St. Cloud Eagles Club with coworkers when Mohr showed up "and tried to get her to leave with him."

She called her father, who picked her up and drove her to Waite Park, where she was then picked up by the shooting victim, who told police he was acting as the woman's sober cab ride.

The woman told police she believes Mohr may have been trying to shoot her, but was not certain. She said he had access to her location through cellphone apps.

The Lakeville City Council voted unanimously Monday in favor of a one-year moratorium on the approval of new housing construction applications.

Lakeville officials say the development of thousands of homes and apartments in recent years has put pressure on the city's infrastructure, primarily its overcrowded schools.

WCCO reports that voters will decide on a $140 million bond referendum for Lakeville Area School District during a special election in May.

Lakeville is also getting ahead of an effort by the Minnesota Legislature, known as the "Yes to Homes" package, to address a statewide housing crisis by loosening local zoning rules and lowering barriers to homeownership.

An annual report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition determined that Minnesota is lacking about 97,500 homes that are affordable to the state’s lowest-income renters.

Lakeville Mayor Luke Hellier told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the city's moratorium "would just ensure that any new legislation that would preempt our current zoning regulations would just be paused until we can figure out what that might mean for us."

A similar moratorium was in place for about two years in Lakeville in the early '90s.

Lakeville currently has more than 77,000 residents, making it one of the top 10 Minnesota cities by population.

While the greater threat of severe storms is in the central and southern Plains, intense storms could develop in Minnesota on Thursday afternoon and evening. How far east they maintain their strength is yet to be determined, but forecast models currently show them weakening by the time they reach the Twin Cities and Rochester.

"As the cold front pushes into the more modest moisture and buoyancy profiles across northern Minnesota, the severe threat should be lesser than areas to the south. Still, proximity to the upper wave should support at least some threat for wind with any thunderstorms that develop," the SPC says.

So, the tornado and hail threat doesn't appear to be anywhere close to last week's outbreak, which dropped violent tornadoes and very large hail in southern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois.

The European model's lightning density forecast shows storms erupting in northwest Minnesota by the early afternoon, with more storms firing all the way south to the Iowa border by about 4 p.m.

The short-term models will add more clarity to the potential outcomes, but only some of them are just now starting to pick up on what could happen. For example, the RRFS model has storms developing in the Dakotas, though not until after roughly 5 p.m.

The Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service agrees that damaging winds will be the main severe hazard with storms in Minnesota. Tornadoes and hail can't be entirely ruled out, but they're not as likely with this setup. Flooding also into a concern, with most locations receiving a half-inch of rain or less.

The upcoming weekend should be dry and not as cold as last weekend. Temperatures should rise into the 50s and 60s, with lows dropping into the 30s.

Firefighters responded to an active spill from a barge at ADM's facility shortly after noon and helped contain the situation, according to the city, which said ADM staff had placed a containment boom around the barge to prevent material from drifting downstream before firefighters arrived.

The crude corn oil that spilled from the barge appears on the water as a yellow-orange substance.

According to the city, fire crews helped place additional booms downstream to capture the oil and helped the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office with traffic control on the river.

The Minnesota State Duty Officer, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Goodhue County Emergency Management were also notified, city officials said.

The incident posed no immediate risk to the public, Red Wing officials say, and the scene has since been turned over to ADM and Clean Harbors for continued response and mitigation.

ADM's facility in Red Wing has operated for over 120 years.

The 25-date "Ride Lonesome" tour was announced Tuesday, including an Oct. 7 show at the Orpheum Theatre, on the heels of a new single by the same name.

"Ride Lonesome" sounds like a classic Beck ballad, with mixing by longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich, who produced several of his albums during the late ’90s and 2000s, including "Sea Change."

Beck's latest album dropped earlier this year, "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime," an eight-song collection of mostly covers. "Ride Lonesome" is his first original song since 2023.

The Wright County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to avoid the 300 block of Atlantic Avenue as of around 10 a.m. as deputies search for the suspect, who is described as a white man who is approximately 5'11", 230 pounds and wearing a red sweatshirt.

The sheriff's office said the public should not confront the man, who is suspected of being armed, but should call 911 if he's spotted.

Authorities in Wright County say they were notified by West Hennepin Public Safety around 7:45 a.m. of a pursuit that began in Hennepin County.

The pursuit by Hennepin County authorities ended when the suspect, driving a stolen vehicle, entered Wright County on Highway 12 in Delano.

The Wright County Sheriff's Office said dispatchers received several reports of the suspect driving recklessly through Delano and continuing into the cities of Montrose and Waverly.

The suspect reportedly abandoned the stolen vehicle and was last seen on foot in Waverly, which caused Humphrey Elementary School to be placed into "secure mode" as a precaution.

The sheriff's office said Wright County deputies, using a K-9 unit and drone, were dispatched around 8:11 a.m. to search for the suspect in Waverly along Highway 12.

The suspect has not been publicly identified, but the Sheriff's Office said his identity was determined through a Minneapolis Police Department alert for a reported domestic assault involving a firearm.

In an update Tuesday afternoon, authorities said the suspect is not believed to be in Waverly anymore and leads are being followed outside Wright County.

The legendary thrash metal band are the latest act added to the inaugural season at the Mystic Lake Amphitheater, with the group taking to the stage on Friday, Sept. 4.

As of now, the show at the 19,000-seat outdoor venue is one of only two Slayer shows where fans can witness Slayer's seminal album, "Reign in Blood" played in its entirety this summer, as the band marks its 40th anniversary.

The band will be supported by Down, Suicidal Tendencies, and Hatebreed.

Slayer joins a lineup for the Mystic Lake Amphitheater's debut season that also includes Guns 'N Roses, Bob Dylan, Hillary Duff, Chris Stapleton, Iron Maiden and Mumford & Sons.

The earliest booked show as things stand is the MGK (Machine Gun Kelly) performance booked for June 22.

The city is circulating an online survey to "help shape a new family space" in downtown Minneapolis, with the goal of soliciting feedback on potential locations, programming, and amenities like food and drink.

At this point, the indoor playground concept is completely hypothetical, since the city will have to convince a landlord to house it. But it's an idea that's been floated for many years as downtown Minneapolis continues to gain more residents, and residents in other neighborhoods of the city look for options for family entertainment.

The Minneapolis Downtown Council pitched an indoor playground in its 2035 plan as a way to attract more families.

Minneapolis doesn't currently have an indoor playground, unlike several surrounding suburbs including Edina, Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Bloomington, Golden Valley, and Maple Grove. Downtown St. Paul, meanwhile, is home to the popular Minnesota Children's Museum.

There have been suggestions that one could also be included in the redevelopment of the Kmart site on Lake Street in south Minneapolis.

The city's survey is open through May 7.

Owner Ann Schuster announced the cafe's second location Tuesday, telling the Minnesota Star Tribune about her plans for the former D'Amico & Sons space.

Per the newspaper, the cafe will be open daily from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. and pizza nights may also be added down the road.

A grand opening is anticipated sometime this fall.

Also moving into the 50th & France area is General Sports Bar, which is taking over the former Salut Bar Americain space.

The new concept from the team behind NOLO's Kitchen is aiming for a late summer opening.

A major renovation is also underway at the former Cocina del Barrio space, where Chef Daniel Del Prado is preparing to open Americana later this year.

Across the street from Smith Coffee & Cafe's new space, Takumi Sushi is set to replace the recently-closed Japanese restaurant Raku.

Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. Saturday to the 1000 block of 41st Street Northwest to a report of a "group of individuals attempting to steal a car then fleeing in a vehicle," according to the Rochester Police Department.

When they arrived at the scene, officers discovered that several vehicles in the area had been "tampered with and rifled through."

About three hours later, policed located the suspect vehicle, which had been reported stolen, in an alley in a downtown Rochester.

Officers eventually arrested four teenage boys who had attempted to flee on foot.

A 16-year-old and a 15-year-old were transported to the East Central Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Anoka County. They face charges for possession of stolen property.

The two other teens were released to their parents.

An appeal has been issued to find a 15-year-old girl reported missing from rural southern Minnesota.

Avey Skillings, of Garden City, an unincorporated community about 15 miles to the southwest of Mankato, was last seen at her home at 11 p.m. Sunday.

A search of the immediate area did not result in the teen being found, with the Blue Earth Sheriff's Office saying that her destination is not known at this time.

"There is a concern for Avey’s safety," the sheriff's office said.

Skillings is describe das 5'1" tall, weighing 110 lbs., with brown hair and brown eyes. It's not known what clothing she was wearing when she disappeared, but police say she has piercings on her nose and eyebrow.

It wasn't an ordinary goal; it was a mesmerizing series as Kirill Kaprizov skated skillfully into the offensive zone, then passed to Quinn Hughes, who pirouetted his way through the defense and found Faber, who jump-cut into the slot and beat Jake Oettinger on his stick side.

Oettinger was otherwise stupendous, twice robbing Matt Boldy with sensational glove saves in the first period. Without Oettinger, Dallas could have trailed by two goals going into the second period. Instead, they used a power-play goal from Matt Duchene, who beat Wallstedt between the legs, for a 2-1 lead at 4:02 of the second frame.

While the skill was on display at times, the physicality took over the style of play. Yakov Trenin, who led the NHL in hits during the regular season and had 13 hits in Game 1, was crushed by an open-ice check, leaving him face-down, bloodied, and out for the rest of the game.

After Duchene's goal, the Wild and Stars got into a significant scrum, with Joel Eriksson Ek taking a roughing penalty, while Duchene was also called for roughing on top of a slashing penalty against Mikko Rantanen.

Minnesota didn't take advantage of that power play, but neither did the Stars when Marcus Foligno was called for a four-minute double minor when he put Thomas Harley in a headlock and buried him into the glass and then the ice in the final seconds of the second period.

Killing a penalty to start the third period put the Wild on their heels, and they didn't have a shot on net for more than seven minutes into the third. The pressure in the defensive zone led to Jason Robertson's goal to give Dallas a 3-1 lead with 12:51 remaining.

Just 2:36 later, Faber found space in the slot and ripped a shot that beat Oettinger on the stick side for his second goal of the night.

Dallas was called for too many men on the ice with 3:44 to play, giving the Wild a power play when they needed it most. But like three power plays earlier in the game, Dallas came up with the kill — and then Minnesota was called for too many men on the ice with 1:21 left on the clock, effectively killing their chance to come all the way back.

Dallas added the dagger with an empty-net goal by Wyatt Johnson with 49 seconds left.

Game 3 will be in St. Paul on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. CT.

Minneapolis Police Department reports that a bicyclist, a yet-to-be-identified man in his 50s, was struck in the intersection of Hiawatha Avenue and East 35th Street around 3 a.m. Monday.

Police responded to the scene and found the victim unconscious, suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite receiving medical aid, including CPR, the man died after being taken to Hennepin Healthcare.

The driver accused of striking the bicyclist is a 23-year-old who was driving a Ford Edge southbound on Hiawatha Avenue when he struck the bicyclist. Police took the driver into custody and booked him into the Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide.

Police said the driver is "suspected of driving under the influence."

The investigation is ongoing, and no further information has been disclosed.

In a Facebook video, Dunmire's Bar & Grill owner Chris Dunmire said the kitchen suffered a small fire caused by greasy rags.

According to Dunmire, the rags were smoldering and ignited a fire when a delivery driver opened the back door and sent a rush of oxygen into the space.

Dunmire said the surrounding tile and a quick response from the Brainerd Fire Department prevented the situation from being much worse and clean-up is now underway.

The restaurant, located just off Highway 210 near the the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport, opened in 2020.

Dunmire's other Brainerd restaurant, Dunmire's on the Lakes, is also closed after it being severely damaged in a flooding incident late last year.

An overhead fire suppression system failed, dumping over 15,000 gallons of water into the building, according to a GoFundMe page.

Bring Me The News reached out to the Brainerd Fire Department for more information on Monday's fire, but has not yet heard back.

Prosecutors last week charged 44-year-old Michael Alan Fredin, of Bloomington, with one felony count of theft.

A power washer worth approximately $9,000 and thousands of feet of cooper wire, valued at $30,000, were reported stolen from the Cargill facility on June 19, 2025, according to the criminal complaint.

A glove that didn't match the gloves worn by Cargill's employees was found on one of the facility's towers and sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for DNA analysis, which showed DNA on the glove matched Fredin's DNA.

Police were again called to Cargill earlier this year, on Feb. 21, and learned chains, bearings, cooper, power tool charging stations, scrap metal and other items had been recently stolen from the facility's maintenance shop.

Forced entry had occurred, the charge states, and the employee showed police a photograph of the red Dodge pickup truck that had been seen on the property at various times - including around 1:45 a.m. on Feb. 19.

Police reviewed in-house records and confirmed Fredin regularly drives the truck shown in the photograph, the complaint alleges.

On March 6, police were called to Cargill's east elevator and met an employee who said he'd been walking around inside of a shed facility when he'd noticed some conduit had been cut and the copper wire removed.

The shed has been closed for around two years and is not used, according to the complaint. However, the bay doors are left open.

The employee told police that someone, or multiple suspects, had stolen the cooper wiring sometime between Feb. 13 and March 6. The employee estimated each conduit holds four to five copper wires, which are each approximately 1,000' long.

According to the complaint, the employee contacted police again to report that someone had also entered the main floor of the actual elevators – located to the west and east of the shed. A junction box was found open, and all the wiring had been removed.

The next evening, police were patrolling the Cargill property when an officer spotted the red Dodge pickup truck sitting vacant in front of the east grain elevator, with a jack stand positioned near the rear axle.

The officer continued to watch from a distance until Fredin allegedly returned to the truck from the storage bin area, put the jack in the truck bed, and drove off.

"The officer stopped Fredin as he left the property for a traffic violation and saw the truck bed contained at least one large piece of used wire and numerous metal shavings, consistent with the wire being freshly cut, and numerous hand and power tools," the charge states.

Fredin allegedly told the officer he was looking for deer and his passenger, not identified in the criminal complaint, also claimed he was looking for deer sheds.

The officer retained the passenger's phone and looked at his texts and Facebook messages, several of which are included in the complaint. One message from 1:50 a.m. on March 5 from "Michael" reads: "How we going to get this wire out or into the woods somehow."

Another from the next night reads: "You going to help strip this shit."

According to the complaint, a wooden pallet found leaning against one of the Cargill bins that night appeared to have been used as a makeshift step to reach the ladder leading to the top of the storage bin. One of the bin's windows was also found open.

Police began monitoring Fredin's movements through a monitoring device placed on his vehicle on March 8, according to the charge.

Investigators observed Fredin's vehicle mostly moved between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., which appeared unusual as Fredin told police he does landscaping and residential and commercial construction jobs.

The complaint reads: "While monitoring the vehicle's movements, officers observed the vehicle to repeatedly take a route that led him directly from his residence to the area of Cargill."

On March 10, a Cargill employee and electrician brought police to where the most recent copper wire theft occurred and it was determined that the wire appeared to match the wire that police had taken as part of the investigation.

Police arrested Fredin due to "habitual traffic offenses", the charge states, and he denied that any items in his truck were from Cargill and claimed the material had come from the dumpster near Harbor Freight.

Police pulled over Fredin again on April 14 and executed a search of his truck, during which officers allegedly found numerous tools with the serial numbers scratched off and a large amount of copper wire.

Fredin declined to make a statement and taken to jail. He's scheduled to appear in Scott County District Court at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 24.

The charge description formally accuses him of theft of property valued at more than $35,000 "on or about" Nov. 14, 2025 through April 14, 2026.

The Minnesota Department of Health announced that the 2025 Minnesota Student Survey shows a 57.7% decrease of self-reported cannabis use in the past 12 months since 2013.

In 2013, just under 15% of eighth, ninth, and 11th graders reported having used cannabis, a figure that has now declined to just 6.3% last year.

Among 11th grade students, 12.7% reported using cannabis in the past 12 months, compared to 25% in 2013. The most dramatic drop is among ninth graders, falling from just under 15% in 2013 to 4.1% last year.

Marijuana was legalized for recreational use in August 2023, and Minnesota has seen the rollout of retail sales across the state over the past year.

"More students now view using cannabis once or twice a week as moderately to greatly harmful, reversing the trend seen from 2013 to 2022," MDH said in its release.

The study did find that of those who are using cannabis, around 41% of them first tried the drug at age 13 or 14, while eighth graders were more likely than ninth or 11th graders to have first tried marijuana at age 12 or younger.

"Despite positive trends, the student survey – indicates that some of our children are encountering cannabis at young ages," said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Dr. Brooke Cunningham.

"We need talk to our children about cannabis before they encounter it because we know the potential harms that early use can bring to their developing brains, mental health and futures."

Yes, you read that fact correctly. The Wild have played in 18 different playoff series, not including this one, and have never held a 2-0 or 3-1 lead. The only time they've ever technically been up two games in a series was in 2015, when they beat the Blues in six games in the first round. But winning 4-2 isn't quite the same as having a two-game lead at any point during a series.

The other four series the Wild have won — two in 2003 and one in 2014 — were by a 4-3 margin. They've also lost 14 series and never led by more than a game in any of those.

In the 2003 first round against the Avalanche, the Wild won game 1, then fell down 3-1 before winning the final three to advance. In the next round against the Canucks, they overcame a 3-1 series deficit once more, only to get swept by Anaheim in the conference finals.

In the 2008 first round, the Wild had a 2-1 lead over Colorado before losing three in a row. In 2014, they were down 2-0 and 3-2 but managed to pull out a seven-game victory over the Avs. They never led the ensuing second-round series against the Blackhawks, which they lost in six games.

In 2015, the Wild led the Blues 1-0 and 2-1 on their way to a six-game win, but they never held a two-game lead within the series. They were swept by Chicago in round two.

Famously, it's been nothing but first-round exits for Minnesota since then — eight of them in ten seasons, to be precise. In the first few of those, the Wild never once led the series. Since then, there's been a lot of disappointment after early leads:

• 2020 vs. VAN: Wild up 1-0, lose 3-1 (COVID season qualifying round)
• 2021 vs. VGK: Wild up 1-0, lose 4-3
• 2022 vs. STL: Wild up 2-1, lose 4-2

In total, the Wild are 0-5 in previous Game 2s after winning the series opener, and are 0-5 in Game 4s when up 2-1. Creating separation in a series has been a major struggle.

Now, you may think this is bad energy to put into the world ahead of tonight's Game 2, and maybe you're right. But we're merely going over an interesting piece of information. Let us remind you that jinxes aren't real and the events of previous years should have no impact on this year.

Plus, with Quinn Hughes, this 2026 Wild team feels different than previous iterations. Young goalie Jesper Wallstedt also played quite well in his playoff debut on Saturday.

The Stars are a great team that's going to come out with all kinds of desperation on Monday, which is reflected in the fact that they're favored to win Game 2. But if the Wild get another strong outing from Wallstedt, and if star forwards like Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov continue to get to dangerous areas, they'll have a real chance to get to a position the franchise has never been in before.

An appeal has been issued for a 12-year-old boy missing from Blue Earth County in southern Minnesota.

The Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office says Sayvon Brown was last seen around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, leaving his home on County Road 17 near Eagle Lake, walking towards Mankato.

Brown was picked up by a light-colored pickup truck in the area of Highway 22 and Adams Street at around 10 p.m., police say, with the release from Blue Earth County authorities describing the boy as a "runaway."

"There is concern for Sayvon's safety," the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said.

The Mad Hatter Bakery and Cafe celebrated its soft opening last week ahead of a grand opening Saturday, April 25 inside the One Corporate Center at 7300 Metro Blvd.

Jules Hill of the Mad Hatter Cake Co., who has been a regular fixture at farmers markets in the Twin Cities for many years, is behind the venture.

“Everything is based around what we would know as comfort food in the U.K.,” she told the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

While continuing to specialize in custom cakes, the Mad Hatter also serves English scones with homemade clotted cream and strawberry jam, fruit buns, traditional Belgian buns and an assortment of other sweets.

The all-day breakfast menu features variations of a classic English breakfast, complete with sausages and baked beans, and a range of breakfast sandwiches and breakfast toast.

There's also a wide assortment of savory lunch offerings including large British sausage rolls (with or without pickle relish and cheese), pasties, meat pies, sandwiches, bangers & mash, fish & chips, battered pork sausages and and more.

The traditional English meal called the ploughman's lunch, for $12, comes with aged British cheddar cheese, sliced ham, pickled onions, pickled beets, sliced apple and bread with butter.

With many corporate offices nearby, the Mad Hatter is open weekdays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The cafe features both dine-in and patio seating.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says it received a report of a rollover crash on the 7800 block of Mullen Road in St. Joseph just after 3 p.m., with a passerby saying that someone was pinned beneath the rolled vehicle.

Responders arrived at the scene and pronounced the driver dead. He has been identified as Christopher Strong, 22.

"Based on evidence at the scene, it is believed that Strong was traveling east on Mullen Road when he lost control in the curves," the sheriff's office said.

"He then went off road into the south ditch, overcorrected, crossed the road, went into the north ditch, and rolled."

The sheriff's office that Strong was "partially ejected" from his vehicle.

There were 5 tornadoes confirmed by the National Weather Service (NWS) in La Crosse last Friday, two of which were EF-2 with winds of 125–130 mph.

Those 11 tornado reports are likely multiple reports of the same tornado in some cases, so the total number of verified tornadoes is likely less in the end. But still, we average only one tornado in the month of April, with many years seeing none in Minnesota. If we get more than 15 severe reports by April 30, it will be the wildest April for severe storms since 2004.

So what the heck is going on? Much of it has to do with our winter. We talked a lot about the strong but very disturbed polar vortex. There are still lingering pockets of cold from that, combined with a lot of heat and moisture already building this spring.

Below is a look at the mid-levels of the atmosphere’s average late February through mid-March pattern as the polar vortex was near the end of its season.

We can see its lingering effects with average temperature anomalies (departure from normal) over the past 30 days:

You can see there’s plenty of cold air lingering in Canada and Alaska. Alaska had one of its coldest March periods in some time. At the same time, notice how much warmer than normal the central and southern U.S. has been. You can guess what that has meant for those of us in between.

If we look at the past 15 days of precipitation, the pattern is pretty clear. Well above normal precipitation from Texas all the way into eastern Minnesota and Wisconsin. The most recent week or so of that activity has come in the form of thunderstorms, and even severe storms.

This has placed the Upper Midwest perfectly in the line of frequent cold fronts, thanks to upper-level lows diving into the Rockies and pushing anomalous warmth and humid air north ahead of them.

June is typically our most active month of severe weather, followed by July. Then August and May are tied, followed by September, and April is usually the least active of our season (April–September).

If you’re trying to glean any trends about the rest of our season from April, good luck. There’s usually very little correlation between April and June severe weather in Minnesota.

If we look at active years, we typically see spikes in the season rather than any consistency on a month-to-month basis. Take last year (2025), for example. We had a staggering 39 tornado reports in June. Second to that was May, with just 6 reports. All the other months were single digits. In 2024, the most active month was August with 13 reports, and all other months were under 10. Similarly, in 2023, it was again June with 13, and other months had fewer than 10. In 2022? You guessed it. One month stood out: 47 tornado reports in May, and every other month in the severe weather season saw under 10 reports.

That doesn’t mean this June, the peak month on average for severe weather, couldn’t be wild. It just means that an active April doesn’t necessarily mean June will be above normal, too. The more likely scenario is that this active period could linger into May until we’ve warmed up those leftover "cold pools" of air across North America.

To be sure, we have another possibility of volatile weather on Thursday. It’s looking increasingly likely that severe storms will be possible.

NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory has an experimental forecast using available model data to come up with severe weather probabilities. Central and southern Minnesota are already in the 15% region, which is the criterion the Storm Prediction Center uses to issue a “slight risk” (level 2 of 5) for severe storms. We'll see if the forecast holds.

So while we have an impressive count of 68 severe weather reports already in April, that count is likely to go higher this week.

Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) is predicting 2026 will be an average year overall for mosquito activity, with July's emergence of cattail mosquitoes expected to cause one notable surge.

The species overwinters as larvae, attached to the root of cattail plants, before emerging in one brood in early July.

Minnesotans endured a significant spike in cattail mosquitoes last year following heavy rain in 2024.

This year, the National Weather Service model suggests the Twin Cities has "equal chances" of a wet or dry summer - meaning precipitation will likely be average.

According to MMCD, the population of Minnesota's most common mosquito, known as a summer floodwater mosquito, will change as rain comes.

"Last year after the cattail surge in July, we stayed pretty much average for mosquito totals through the rest of the summer," MMCD writes, suggesting that might be in the cards again for 2026.

This spring, mosquitoes are already active and causing bites on warm days. According to MMCD, a staffer even spotted mosquitoes while skiing at Afton Alps – which was a first.

Ticks are also active, with the threat of Lyme disease especially high in May and June as nymphs peak.

MMCD's work to control mosquitoes and ticks officially started April 13, so you may spot workers in your community. Helicopter treatments are expected to begin this week. Treatments are also applied to wetlands by drone.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has confirmed that the Water Works Pavilion will be home to Arch and River this coming summer.

The restaurant is a new concept from owner Diane Moukouri and her husband, executive chef Fritz Ebanda, who are the duo behind B'beri Desserts, a French pastry shop located inside the Alliance Francaise MSP building in the Near North neighborhood.

Moukouri and Ebanda are promising "French bistronomie with Afro-Caribbean twist" at the new restaurant, serving coffee and pastries in the morning; brunch, lunch and goûter (French afternoon snack) in the afternoon; and "dinner and a charming dessert bar experience" in the evening.

The B'beri owners were selected by a panel of Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board staff after a request for proposals was issued in December. A five-year concessions agreement running through 2031 will be discussed by park board commissioners at an April 29 meeting.

Owamni, the award-winning restaurant from Sean "The Sioux Chef" Sherman, is expected to open in The Guthrie Theatre in late spring. It is changing its name as a result of the move to Indígena by Owamni.

It happened in the ditch near the exit to County Road 81, and the burn scar isn't hard to spot as it wiped out the vegetation in a large area between the freeway and the fence that separates the ditch from local businesses.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation shut down the right lane, resulting in a temporary backup. As of 12:30 p.m., only a couple of fire department vehicles remained on scene, though the right lane still appeared to be closed to traffic.

The grass fire happened amid extreme fire conditions in parts of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro area, where gusty winds and low humidity have set the stage for fires to spread rapidly upon ignition.

Most of Minnesota is under a red flag warning until 8 p.m. Monday.

"A red flag warning is issued when we identify weather conditions that promote rapid spread of fire," the National Weather Service says, "which may become life-threatening."

Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Missouri-based Medical Transportation Management, or MTM Health, recently informed Southdale Transportation Services of its plans to end its contract with the non-emergency medical transportation company.

The company says it will result in about 95 layoffs, most of whom are people of east African descent.

The contract termination is "without cause" and will take effect May 8, according to a letter from MTM Health. But an MTM Health spokesperson subsequently said the company chose to end the contract due to "potential alleged violations of fraud, waste, and abuse."

Southdale Transportation Services General Manager Ahmed Jama rejects the claim of fraud, no evidence of which has thus far been provided by MTM.

Jama says that 2025 audits Southdale by both MTM and the Minnesota Department of Transportation found the company in full compliance with no significant negative findings. MTM did not respond to KSTP when asked whether any alleged violations had been reported to state or federal officials.

Jama alleges that the cancellation of the contract is "blatant discrimination" against a Somali-owned company, and a product of the "anti-Somali campaign orchestrated by Donald Trump and his supporters."

It comes a time where Minnesota's east African community has been targeted by the Trump administration over the Feeding Our Future COVID child nutrition fraud, which has since seen several dozen members of the state's Somali community prosecuted.

Non-emergency medical transportation is one of 14 state-run Medicaid programs that have been identified as being at "high-risk" of fraud in Minnesota, but Southdale Transportation Service says it has been operating for 20 years, providing an estimated 10,000 rides to Minnesotans with medical needs every month.

Southdale Transportation workers rallied at the Minnesota Capitol over the weekend, with Jama saying the group intends to gather support against the cancellation of the contract, and potentially involve the Minnesota Attorney General's Office.

"Losing Southdale Transportation as a provider will have an enormous impact on the community," he said. "Many of our clients prefer our drivers and dispatchers because of our reliability, compassion and understanding, especially parents of autistic children. Some clients were on the phone crying when we told them we will no longer be providing service."

The co-branded restaurant, which features a drive-thru, is on track to open this summer in Prior Lake's former Burger King space.

Baskin-Robbins, the world's largest ice cream shop chain, has a dozen locations in Minnesota, including co-branded locations with Dunkin' in Eagan, Lakeville, West St. Paul and elsewhere.

Dunkin, the nation's largest coffee and donuts brand, currently has 45 Minnesota locations.

A grand opening date in Prior Lake has not yet been announced.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has been eying Thursday for a few days already, and on Monday, it expanded its risk area further north all the way into far southern Minnesota.

CAPE (storm juice) will rise above 1,000 all the way into Minnesota, giving fuel to an approaching cold front that allows thunderstorms to develop from northeast Kansas to southern Minnesota.

"The better severe potential will be south of MN/WI at this point," the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities says, "but where the upper low pivots and brings the surface low may make for better severe weather potential into the Upper Midwest on Thursday."

StormNet, which did a fabulous job identifying last week's tornado outbreak, shows a medium threat of tornadoes from central Iowa to southern Kansas, with a lower threat as far north as the Twin Cities and St. Cloud.

Colorado State University's model puts a slight risk of severe weather all the way into northern Minnesota. Check out the university's model (left) compared to the SPC's outlook (right).

The National Severe Storms Laboratory's model has the bullseye in the Southern Plains, but it's also highlighting a northern pocket of 15-30% severe weather probabilities in Minnesota.

We'll be tracking this as the situation evolves, and we should start to get a much better read on what could happen once new data is analyzed by the shorter-term models over the next 24 hours.

Nasir Whitlock (DeLaSalle), Lehigh to Georgia Tech

Whitlock won Minnesota Mr. Basketball with the Islanders in 2023 before starting his college career at Lehigh University. He led the Mountain Hawks to their first NCAA Tournament since 2012, and he won the Patriot League tournament MVP. He averaged 20.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as a junior, which made him a highly-touted prospect in the portal.

He will play his final season of college basketball at the Power Conference level with first-year head coach Scott Cross at Georgia Tech. The Yellowjackets will have a new-look roster with a new head coach, and Whitlock has the opportunity to be one of their best players.

Daniel Freitag (Bloomington Jefferson/Breck), Wisconsin to Buffalo to Oregon State

Freitag was a highly touted high school prospect in the 2024 class. He chose Wisconsin over notable top offers from Minnesota, Notre Dame and Virginia, among others. His freshman season with the Badgers did not go as planned, so he dropped down to the mid-major level to play for Buffalo.

The 6-foot-2 guard has a breakout season for the Bulls with 19.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He will now join first-year head coach Justin Joyner at Oregon State, as the Beavers transition back into the new Pac-12 conference. Freitag has a chance to be a star of that conference.

Boden Kapke (Holy Family), Butler to Boston College to Nebraska

Kapke is another player who's on his third college. He began his career at Butler, where he played a limited role as an ancillary player for two seasons. He finally got his chance in a bigger role last season at Boston College, and he averaged 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He will now play his final season closer to home at Nebraska, and he could be a key big man for the Cornhuskers in 2026-27.

Camden Heide (Waytaza), Purdue to Texas to South Carolina

Heide played his final season of high school basketball in Utah, but he made a name for himself at Wayzata. He was a highly touted four-star prospect in the class of 2022, and he has had an odd college career. He redshirted his first year at Purdue before assuming a reserve role for two seasons. He never averaged more than 5.0 points per game, but it was clear that he still had a ton of potential.

The 6-foot-7 forward was once again highly touted as a prospect in the transfer portal last offseason, and he landed at Texas. He started 29 games for the Longhorns, but averaged just 5.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. He'll remain in the SEC, and he might finally get his chance as a more high-usage option next season with South Carolina.

Taison Chatman (Totino-Grace), Ohio State to Utah

Chatman is another player who hasn't lived up to the hype he had as a high school prospect. He was the consensus No. 1 player in the state in the class of 2023, and he chose Ohio State over notable top offers from Minnesota, Michigan, UConn and Kansas, among others.

The 6-foot-4 guard played in 17 games in a reserve role as a true freshman before missing the entire 2024-25 season due to injury. He returned to Columbus and played 12.9 minutes per game last season. Next season at Utah might be his first time to shine at the college level in a bigger role.

The rap legend will take to the stage at the Treasure Island Amphitheater on Saturday, September 5 as part of the Welch casino's summer concert series.

Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. at TIcasino.com, with reserved seats available starting at $60, while Michelob ULTRA Zone tickets will cost $259.

It'll be Snoop's second appearance in Minnesota in less than a year, after he was named the star performer for the halftime show of the Minnesota Vikings' Christmas Day game against the Detroit Lions on Netflix.

Since bursting onto the scene with debut album, "Doggystyle," in 1993, Snoop has gone on to become a star across numerous disciplines, forging careers in movies, television, cooking, and even sports via his involvement with Team USA at the Winter Olympics.

He's the biggest name announced for this year's Treasure Island summer concert series so far, with other announced acts including Joe Bonamassa and Gov’t Mule, and Shinedown with Coheed & Cambria.

The incident began when a man was allegedly driving through St. Cloud, aggressively following another driver on northbound Highway 15, according to the Sartell Police Department.

"In an effort to get away, the victim exited onto County Road 120," police said in a release. "While in the area near Sam's Club, the suspect vehicle pulled alongside the victim's vehicle. The driver then fired multiple shots, one of which struck the victim."

The individual who was shot called 911, while the shooter fled the scene, only to have his vehicle found at a Sauk Rapids bar a short time later.

The 24-year-old suspect wasn't with his vehicle at the bar, but he turned himself in late Sunday morning. Jail records indicate that he's being held on pending charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, harassment, and violating a restraining order while in possession of a dangerous weapon.

The victim is expected to survive, though the extent of their injuries hasn't been revealed.

"This incident is believed to be targeted and not random," police added. "Investigators believe the suspect targeted the victim due to tensions involving a mutual friend."

Andrew James Neuberger, 21, of Minneapolis, was killed when his motorcycle hit a guardrail on I-35W near Johnson Street early Friday morning. 

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the motorcycle continued north for around another quarter mile before coming to rest near the guardrail on the right-hand side of the interstate. Neuberger then came to rest on the left shoulder. 

Neuberger, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, according to State Patrol. 

A GoFundMe has since been created to help Neuberger’s family pay for funeral expenses. According to the fundraiser, Neuberger was an older brother to six siblings. 

“Andrew grew up alongside his mom through every chapter of her life, and he loved his little siblings -Wes, Bryn, Addy, Kyleigh, Payton and Avery- with his whole heart. He was a big brother in every sense of the word,” the fundraiser reads. “His Dad, Rustin, was one of his best friends. They loved hiking, snowboarding and road trips.” 

As of Sunday, the fundraiser had reached around $50,000 of its $70,000 goal.

According to the Moorhead Police Department, officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of 3rd Street South at around 2:40 a.m. At the scene, officers were unable to verify the report, finding no damage or victims.

At around 4:45 a.m., additional reports of gunfire were received in the same area, prompting officers to return.

A resident then reported that a suspect had entered a nearby home just after 5 a.m. Officers approached the home and found a discarded rifle out front.

Police attempted to make contact with the suspect inside but were unsuccessful. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Malachi Shabaiash of Moorhead, fled the home on foot armed with what appeared to be a rifle, according to the department.

Police then established a perimeter around the home and issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

Shabaiash was eventually found hiding in a backyard. He was still in possession of the rifle at the time.

Shabaiash was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained from a K9 used to take him into custody. He was later booked into the Clay County Jail and faces charges including second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and second-degree attempted murder, according to Inforum.

According to the Columbia Heights Fire Department, Fire Captain Anthony “Tony” Cuzzupe died unexpectedly on Friday.

Cuzzupe, who had been with the department since 2002, had been a full-time firefighter since 2005 and a captain since 2016.

“I had the privilege of working alongside Tony for several years when I was a fire captain. In the fire service, people often talk about brotherhood, but it is difficult to fully understand unless you have lived it. It goes beyond trust on the fireground,” Columbia Heights Fire Chief Daniel O’Brien wrote in a Saturday Facebook post.

“It is built over countless 24-hour shifts, shared challenges, and a level of connection that stays with you for life.”

In Facebook comments, several others remembered Cuzzupe. One commenter described him as “kind, compassionate, and loving to all,” while another added that he “contributed to the community with real courage, grit, strength, and a big heart.”

The Wild blitzed the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of their highly-anticipated first-round series on Saturday, stunning the home crowd in a dominant 6-1 road win. Minnesota led 4-0 less than halfway through the second period after a barrage of goals, then held on in a game that never got particularly stressful for the visitors.

The Stars, who went 50-20-12 in the regular season, didn't lose a game by five goals once all season. The Wild will now have an opportunity to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series on Monday night, before coming home to St. Paul for games 3 and 4.

Joel Eriksson Ek scored the first and fifth goals for the Wild, marking his second career multi-goal playoff game. Matt Boldy scored two of his own, including a late empty-netter. Kirill Kaprizov and Ryan Hartman also found the back of the net for Minnesota against Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger. Kaprizov added a pair of assists, while Mats Zuccarello assisted on three of the five tallies. Defensemen Brock Faber and Quinn Hughes each recorded an assist, went plus-3, and made a major impact on the game.

On the other end of the ice, 23-year-old Wild goalie Jesper Wallstedt picked up the win in his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut. He saved 27 of 28 Stars shots and looked good, guaranteeing that he'll remain in net for Game 2.

The Wild struck first, a little over five minutes into the first period, when Boldy and Zuccarello set up Eriksson Ek on the power play. Boldy's one-touch pass from below the goal line gave the Wild's top center a great look in the slot, and he didn't miss.

Despite some chances both ways, it remained a 1-0 game after the first 20 minutes. And then, after the first intermission, the Wild ran away with it.

A Kaprizov snipe just under the crossbar, set up by Hartman and Zuccarello, made it 2-0 less than a minute into the second period. A Hartman deflection of a Faber pass made it 3-0 shortly thereafter. And Boldy make it a stunning 4-0 lead, 6:30 into the period, when he stuffed home a loose puck.

Dallas got on the board on a Jason Robertson power-play goal later in the second period, momentarily breathing some life into the crowd at American Airlines Center. But Wallstedt made a big save not long after that goal to prevent the Stars from inching closer, and Dallas was never able to find another. The Wild had a big penalty kill in the third period and all but sealed it with Eriksson Ek's second goal.

It is worth noting that the Stars, who have been to three straight conference finals, have been in this position before. They lost Game 1 at home against the Avalanche 5-1 last year, then rallied and won the series in seven games. In fact, they've lost Game 1 in five of the six series they've won over the past three years, including in 2023 against the Wild. They won't be rattled by this loss, and there's a lot of hockey left to play.

Still, this one couldn't have gone any better for the Wild, who are looking to snap their streak of eight straight first-round defeats. They need three wins in the next six games to do it.

Game 2 on Monday is set for 8:30 p.m. central.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse has released the results from its initial investigations into Friday's tornado outbreak, confirming three tornadoes in southeastern Minnesota and three in western Wisconsin.

The strongest of the three in Minnesota was an EF-2 twister that damaged dozens of properties in the Stewartville area, with the NWS estimating wind speeds topped out at 130 mph.

The tornado traveled around 10 miles, and was an estimated 175 yards wide.

Remarkable footage has emerged from one household in the path of the tornado, with two residents and their dog just exiting their living room before their ceiling collapsed.

Another EF-2 tornado, this one around 7.5 miles long, was reported east of Rochester in the Viola-Plainview area, with wind speeds hitting at 125 mph.

The third tornado was an EF-1 twister that ran for 12 miles, with winds topping out at 100 mph in the Potsdam area.

Officials in Olmsted County said around 30 homes were damaged in Marion Township, to the southeast of Rochester, and 22 were damaged in Stewartville, eight of them significantly.

"Some of the worst damage was seen near Marion road just northeast of Highway 52 where homes were more severely damaged with roof removal and partially collapsed exterior walls," the NWS says in its report. "The tornado was on the ground for about 14 minutes using radar estimation."

Just across the border in Wisconsin, an EF-3 tornado was confirmed in the Cream area, traveling around eight miles, with wind speeds topping out at 140 mph.

"The tornado damaged a family home residence of good construction removing many exterior walls and the roof near State Road 88 south of Cream," the NWS says.

The man who long sat at the piano in the corner of Palmer's Bar will celebrate his 99th birthday at The Hook and Ladder with a host of collaborators. That Palmer's residency, the Church of Cornbread, has shifted over to the Schooner Tavern, so he can still be seen at least once a week — often more than that — but the birthday celebration is, obviously, a special occasion. How often do you head to a local bar for someone's 99th birthday? The main show sold out, but the Hook and Ladder has added a matinee encore for Saturday, April 25.

Bob Moses and Cannons will bring some electro-pop fun to the Palace Theatre on Thursday night.

Jeremy Messersmith - "Fox/Coyote" release show

Over two nights, Jeremy Messersmith will celebrate the release of his latest album, "Fox/Coyote." The songwriter — whose frequently pithy songs sway from sparse folk to sweeping chamber pop — is promising two different shows for each night. On the first night, he'll be joined by anni xo. Brian Tighe of The Hang Ups will open the following evening.

Sunpearl will also be celebrating a new album on Friday. The ambient vocal project will welcome "seladona" at Icehouse with an ensemble that features Isabel Fajardo, Toby Ramaswamy, Kevin Gamble, and Trevor Peterson.

A similarly minimal show will take place at The Cedar Cultural Center with the return of pianist and composer Kelly Moran.

Trace Adkins will bring his “30th Anniversary Tour” to the Waite Park venue on July 10. 

The three-time ACM-winning songwriter is marking three decades since his debut record, “Dreamin’ Out Loud.” It featured the singles “(This Aint’) No Thinkin’ Thing” and "I Left Something Turned On at Home," which hit no. 1 and no. 2 on the country charts.

No openers have been announced for his stop at The Ledge Amphitheater. 

It’s the ninth show added to the venue’s country-leaning schedule, which includes appearances from Brantley Gilbert, Little River Band, Wynonna Judd and Melissa Etheridge, and comedian John Mulaney.

Tickets for Adkins’ show at the Ledge are on sale now.

In January, responding the ICE surge in Minnesota, it switched to a donation-based model, offering free meals to community members who need assistance. Initially, owner Dylan Alverson had said that the model would remain "until the occupation of Minneapolis is over."

The 15-year-old business converted to a nonprofit and, in March, announced that it would maintain the new model going forward.

"Yes, we are still free," Alverson says in the restaurant's update, shared to Instagram. "We will continue being this way, and things are going good. We've had ups and downs. Mostly ups, honestly."

In March, the restaurant gave away 3,000 breakfasts, 3,000 coffee drinks, 1,000 pancakes, 1,000 sandwiches, and 600 burgers, according to the update.

He adds that anyone looking to support Post Modern Times should "continue being our customers" and "go to our website and buy merch."

Post Modern Times, located in Minneapolis' Powderhorn Park neighborhood, is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day of the week except Tuesdays, when it is closed.

The NBA and NHL postseasons are finally here. Both the Timberwolves and Wild have been on course for the playoffs for a while now. The Wolves enter in a bit of an injury-induced slump, though with a week to rest their stars, they should be up for yet another postseason showdown with the Nuggets. Meanwhile, the Wild secured the third seed in the Central Division after a 104-point season and now face the Dallas Stars (112 points) in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Meanwhile, the Twins have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball. After an offseason with little spending, many assumed it was going to be another long season. However, new manager Derek Shelton has inspired the Twins to one of the better early records in baseball at 11-9, going 8-3 in their last 11 games.

The week ahead presents a tricky schedule for the Twins. They began a three-game home series with a loss against a good Cincinnati Reds team on Friday. The Twins will have a travel day Monday as they embark on an East Coast road trip that starts with a three-game series in New York against the high-spending Mets on Tuesday, followed by a three-game series in Tampa against the Rays, who sit first in the AL East. In the midst of all of that on-field action, the NFL will hold one of its most popular yearly events, the NFL Draft. The Vikings have four top-100 picks to help reload after a 9-7 season. The first round takes place on Thursday evening, starting at 7 p.m. CT, and the Vikings have the No. 18 overall pick. Minnesota will have three picks on Day 2 of the draft, which starts at 6 p.m. on Friday night. They will then have five picks on Day 3, which gets underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Outside of the big four teams, there is also plenty of action. Gophers gymnastics shocked everybody late Thursday when they qualified for the Final Four for the first time in program history. They will take on SEC powerhouses Florida, LSU, and Oklahoma on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m., in the Final Four.

Also, the Minnesota Frost wrap up their third regular season with a trio of games. The Frost have already secured a spot in the playoffs and look all but set to enter as the No. 3 seed, behind the Montreal Victoire and Boston Fleet.

Winners of three straight across all competitions, Minnesota United continues their early-season MLS schedule with a trio of games over the next week. They will return home for just the third time this season on Saturday, hosting the Portland Timbers. The Loons will then travel to Texas to take on high-scoring FC Dallas on Wednesday night before returning home to host one of the best teams in the league, LAFC, next Saturday.

No matter where you turn over the next week, there will be plenty of quality Minnesota sports to consume.

Founded in 2014, the distillery has released a variety of whiskies, as well as brandy, aquavit, gin, vodka, and cordials. An announcement shared to social media cites a changing landscape for distilleries and financial struggles as a reason for the closure.

"We are proud of what we've built together, and this was not a decision made lightly," reads an announcement the distillery shared on social media. 

"When J. Carver was founded, our goal was simple: to create unique, locally sourced, artisan craft spirits for the Minnesota market. Over the years, we introduced more than 20 high-quality products, opened a welcoming cocktail room, hosted memorable events, and were honored with a number of awards."

Details about the distillery's challenges weren't shared in the statement.

"The demands continue to grow," the distillery says, "while returns have become more limited. After careful consideration, we have determined that further investment is not justified by the potential rewards."

The distillery has not shared an exact closing date, but says it plans to close no later than October of this year.

Both Melanie Martinez and Teddy Swims have announced stops at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul. On the other side of the river, R&B stars Chris Brown and Usher will make their way to U.S. Bank Stadium over the summer. A few months later, rising pop star Sombr will make the leap from the Palace Theatre, where he played last fall, to the Target Center, accompanied by The Last Dinner Party.

Meanwhile, First Avenue has announced a four-night stand with They Might Be Giants. They'll play two nights at First Avenue, followed by two nights at The Fitzgerald Theater.
