10 finalists for 'Best Minnesota Town' announced – voting is underway now

Did your town make the list?

Plenty of Minnesota cities have been nominated for things like "best small town" in the Midwest, and some have even competed for best small town in the entire U.S.

But what about the best town in Minnesota?

That's the real burning question, and now you can help answer it by voting in this new online poll from Minnesota Monthly magazine.

There are 10 finalists: Austin, Bemidji, Duluth, Grand Marais, Hopkins, New Ulm, Owatonna, St. Cloud, Waconia, and Walker.

Greater Minnesota is well represented in the list, with only one of the towns – the suburb of Hopkins – representing the Twin Cities.

Minnesota Monthly says 31 cities nominated themselves for the contest, which is in its first year.

The finalists were chosen by Minnesota Monthly's editor as well as "a panel of notable Minnesotans," the magazine says.

If you're wondering what qualifies for "best Minnesota town," the criteria are pretty loose. The magazine's website mentions qualities like scenic beauty with "wonderful access to nature," "rich history with a charming downtown," and "lively" arts and culture scenes.

In short, "the town that most embodies the Spirit of Minnesota."

Voting went live Monday morning. If you really, really want one of these towns to win (or if you're pulling for all of them), good news: you're allowed to vote up to 10 times a day.
