End of an era in St. Paul, Macy's River Room closes Feb. 1

Lunchtime reservations at downtown St. Paul's longtime destination for popover pastries are filling up fast, the Pioneer Press reports. The chandeliers at Macy's River Room restaurant will go dark on Feb. 1.

The first floor eatery is one of St. Paul's oldest -- dating back to 1947. The Star Tribune reports the River Room debuted inside Schuneman's, before Dayton's bought the department store and moved it across the street.

The Pioneer Press notes the Lakeshore Grill in the Southdale Macy's will continue to serve giant popovers.

Earlier this month, Ohio-based Macy's confirmed it was leaving downtown St. Paul and closing its iconic store early this spring. The retailer kicked off a closeout sale last week.
