An 'Indoor skydiving' experience could be coming to Minnetonka

...and bringing jobs with it.

Does the above activity look like something you'd pay money to do?

It's called "indoor skydiving," and it could be coming to Minnesota soon.

That's because a company called iFLY – a chain of indoor skydiving facilities with dozens of locations around the world – has applied to open a branch in the Twin Cities.

Here's a pretty effective demonstration of how it looks (presumably with a bit of practice):

As the Business Journal reports, the first Minnesota iFLY would be in Minnetonka's Ridgedale Center mall, if approved.

In its proposal submitted last month (which is worth checking out if you want to see how the site would look, and how indoor skydiving works), the company says the location would bring over two dozen jobs, including 18 full-time positions.

Additionally, they're promising the 5,000-square-foot facility would serve "over 150,000 customers annually."

Considering each 60-second "flight" in the wind chamber is $34.98 – per person – that's potentially a lot of money.

iFLY, which is headquartered in Austin, Texas, describes itself as the "World's largest designer, builder and operator of vertical wind tunnels" – and the "undisputed industry leader" since "creating the market in 1997."

According to an update posted by the city of Minnetonka over the weekend, the plan is the subject of a planning commission meeting next week, followed by a City Council session on Monday, Oct. 23.

GoMN has reached out to city officials for more information.
