After nearly four decades as artistic director at the Penumbra Theatre Company in St. Paul, Lou Bellamy is passing the torch to his daughter, the Pioneer Press reports.

The Penumbra announced Monday that Sarah Bellamy, 35, will take over the position in 2017. Lou and Sarah Bellamy are currently serving as co-artistic directors at the theater.

Michael Kaiser, the president of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Penumbra consultant, lauded the decision to appoint Sarah Bellamy to the esteemed position. He told the Star Tribune that she's "the perfect choice."

"In terms of scope, Penumbra is the most important African-American theater in the world,” Kaiser told the Star Tribune, adding that funders value continuity and the promotion ensures the theater's future.

The paper says the move makes Sarah Bellamy one of the youngest, most high-profile female theater leaders in the country.

The news Monday follows Penumbra's announcement in October of a financial turnaround following the cancellation of most of its 2012-13 season due to deep debt.

An audit of the Penumbra's finances said the theater finished the fiscal year at the end of June with $130,779 in assets, compared with a $715,243 deficit the year before.
