The best high school in Minnesota is Math and Science Academy in Woodbury.

That's according to U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings of the best high schools, which came out Tuesday. The report touts the charter school's Advanced Placement participation, which is at 83 percent, as well as students high proficiency in math and science.

To come up with the list, U.S. News and World Report reviewed 28,496 U.S. public high schools for how well they serve their students, student outcomes, graduation rates, and proficiency testing – 158 of Minnesota's 517 schools were ranked.

Here are the top 10 in Minnesota, and where the rank nationally:

  1. Math and Science Academy in Woodbury. (National rank: No. 203.)
  2. Orono Senior High in Orono. (No. 249 nationally.)
  3. Mahtomedi Senior High in Mahtomedi. (No. 286 nationally.)
  4. Edina Senior High in Edina. (No. 313 nationally.)
  5. Mankato West Senior High in Mankato. (No. 449 nationally.)
  6. Mounds View Senior High in Arden Hills. (No. 460 nationally.)
  7. Minnetonka Senior High in Minnetonka. (No. 477 nationally.)
  8. Eastview Senior High in Apple Valley. (No. 521 nationally.)
  9. Irondale Senior High in New Brighton. (No. 538 nationally.)
  10. Eagan Senior High in Eagan. (No. 597 nationally.)

No Minnesota schools made the report's top 100 this year. But the Pioneer Press says two schools did last year – Nova Classical Academy in St. Paul and Treknorth in Bemidji – however they didn't make any lists this year.

Where Minnesota stands

As for how Minnesota compares to other states, it comes in at No. 27. This rating is based on which states have the largest proportion of high schools earning gold and silver medals (the top seven schools in Minnesota earned gold medals).

According to the report, 1.4 percent of Minnesota's high schools earned a gold medal, while 9.3 percent (48 schools) earned silver.

If you look at No. 1 Maryland, 5.9 percent of its schools earned gold medals, while 21.6 percent earned silver.
