'Bizarre Foods' host Andrew Zimmern wins James Beard Award

Minnesota-based chef and TV personality Andrew Zimmern was honored by the James Beard Foundation Friday at the esteemed organization's annual awards celebration in New York City, the Star Tribune reports.

Zimmern, who hosts the Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods America," won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Personality/Host.

Zimmern and co-producer Colleen Needles Steward were also nominated for the Best On-Location TV Program award, but lost out to Anthony Bourdain's "The Mind of a Chef."

"Bizarre Foods America" is produced by Needles Steward's Tremendous! Entertainment, which has offices in Eden Prairie and North Hollywood, Calif.

Friday's awards were for books, broadcast and journalism. On Monday, another ceremony is set to name the best chefs and restaurants.

Other Twin Cities winners included "The Perennial Plate" hosts Daniel Klein and Mirra Fine, For Best Video Webcast, On Location.

Two Minneapolis chefs -- Jack Riebel, the chef and co-owner of Butcher & the Boar, and Michelle Gayer, the chef and owner of Salty Tart -- are among the finalists.
