Broadway actor from St. Paul to compete on new season of 'Survivor'

Another Minnesota native is taking a shot at reality show stardom.

The Pioneer Press says Reed Kelly, a St. Paul native, is one of the 18 competitors on "Survivor: San Juan del Sur – Blood vs. Water," the 29th installment of the popular CBS series.

The first episode of the season airs Wednesday on WCCO-TV in the Twin Cities area.

A 2001 Hill-Murray High School graduate, Kelly isn't exactly new to exposure on the national stage. Entertainment Weekly says the actor played "Debut Spider-Man" and the villain "Swiss Miss" in the musical "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark," and was an ensemble player in musicals "Wicked" and "The Addams Family."

The hook for the latest season of "Survivor" is that the "castaways" will be competing against loved ones. In Kelly's case, he will be facing off against his boyfriend and fellow stage actor Josh Canfield, 33.

Recalling a conversation with Canfield for the Pioneer Press, Kelly said, laughing, "We were like, 'I will vote you off in a heartbeat if it serves us in the game.'"

Several media outlets including have dubbed Kelly and Canfield the "Broadway Boyfriends." CBS' "Survivor" website has an introductory video featuring the duo.

When "Survivor" debuts Wednesday, Kelly will becomes the latest Minnesotan to seek reality show fame.

Earlier this year, Minneapolis singer Kat Perkins, dubbed the "Nanny Rocker," made it top three on NBC's "The Voice" competition.
