Four Twin Cities Bruegger's Bagels outlets are among 30 nationally that have closed.

The bagel chain confirmed to GoMN that decisions had been made to close the cafes – most of which are in eastern markets – based on financial performance.

The Twin Cities locations shutting down are as follows:

  • 50th Street and Penn Avenue South in Minneapolis.
  • Lake Street in Uptown, Minneapolis.
  • TCF Tower Skyway, Minneapolis.
  • Commerce Hill in Woodbury.

Diners had noted their local Bruegger's had shut up shop, with signs placed in the window of the 50th and Penn cafe on Saturday.

It comes just four months after Bruegger's was bought out by Caribou Coffee, and now operates under Caribou subsidiary, the Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, which operates Einstein Bros. Bagels.

With takeovers come the inevitable review of individual store performance, and the decision to close the 30 stores because they weren't hitting targets.

The move, Einstein Noah said in a statement, will help the company improve its "positioning for future growth."

The company says it's trying to find other jobs for "as many managers and team members as possible," which may include positions at Einstein Bros. and Caribou Coffee stores.

Bruegger's will still have a huge presence in Minnesota. Even with the closure of its four Twin Cities locations, there are 38 others in the state – most of them in the metro area.
