California filmmaker secures enough funds to make 'Duluth is Horrible'

A San Francisco filmmaker's dream of making his proposed movie "Duluth is Horrible" is about to become a reality.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that Vincent Gargiulo reached his Kickstarter goal of raising $10,000 to make the film -- so he's taking up temporary residence in Duluth in February.

He tells the paper "he's a little shocked" that the project is actually going to happen. The filmmaker's 30-day campaign to raise funds on Kickstarter was due to run out Saturday.

Gargiulo announced the project in early December, which he calls "a series of vignettes chronicling a few lonely people in Duluth, MN searching for a connection in a bleak winter. It’s a comedy. Sorta."

The money -- courtesy of 81 Kickstarter contributors -- will help Gargiulo hire a cast and crew for the film, which will be 20 minutes in length.

According to Gargiulo on his Kickstarter page, "Duluth is Horrible" will be made up of short vignettes that "connect loosely," and scenes will "include the aftermath of a breakup from both sides, an older zookeeper on a online date, a Redditor complaining about his cat, a karaoke scene, a disillusioned Sex Chat girl, 5 people dressed as Carmen Miranda," among others.
