Coen brothers' new film gets December release date

Author:

The studio distributing Minnesota filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen's next film appears to be positioning it for a run at the next Oscars.

Hitfix reports that "Inside Llewyn Davis" -- the Coens' music tale set amid the 1960's folk scene -- will open in limited release Dec. 7 and expand into more theaters Dec. 20, exposing the film in the thick of awards season -- about a month before the Academy Award nominations are announced.

The Minneapolis natives' latest indie film, which was picked up for distribution by CBS Films in February, is already scheduled to compete at the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival, which runs May 15-26.

Oscar Isaac plays the title role in "Llewyn Davis," which also stars Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and John Goodman.

Roseau, Minn., native Garrett Hedlund ("Tron: Legacy") and Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham ("Amadeus") also star.

Some of the exteriors for the film were shot in Medford, Minn., which is near Faribault.

Like many of their other films, Joel and Ethan Coen shared writing, directing, editing and producing duties on "Inside Llewyn Davis."
