Common and the tale of how he let Prince down

The hip hop artist shared his story with TBS 'Storyville.'

An invite to the stage with Prince should be the highlight of anyone's career; unfortunately for Common, it proved one of his more embarrassing moments.

The hip-hop star shared the tale of how he first met Minnesota's greatest musician with the TBS program Storyville, which sees stories of celebrities' "wild adventures" shared in animated form.

Common's story is... well, it's not a "wild adventure" and would barely warrant any second thought were it not about Prince.

He details how he met the Purple One for the first time when performing for him during a birthday show at Paisley Park.

This performance led to an invite to join Prince on stage during his famous residency at London's O2 Arena in 2007.

Unfortunately, Prince wanted him to come on and help him sing "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry, a song that Common did not know the words to.

Making matters worse, issues with his contact lenses made it impossible for him to read the teleprompter, forcing Prince to cut the performance short.

The Purple One's comment to Common after the show? "Wow, erm, that, er, really went well."

It just goes to show that no matter what embarrassing moment you've had in the past, there are few things worse than disappointing Prince.

Have a listen to Common's story.
