A 24-year-old computer technician from Coon Rapids has been crowned the "Funniest Person in the Twin Cities," the Pioneer Press reports.

Ali Sultan, who moved to Coon Rapids from Yemen about a decade ago, won the Acme Comedy Company's annual amateur contest in Minneapolis Tuesday night.

Sultan beat out more than 150 other aspiring comedians in the contest, which took place over the past three months. Sultan took home $1,000 for his efforts.

The contest was judged by local radio personalities, comedians and writers. To qualify, the contestants were required to have never received payment for their stand-up gigs.

The competitors were each given a limit of three minutes to present original material, and they were judged on stage presence, creativity and audience response.

Sultan isn't a complete stranger to the comedy scene.

He participated in the New York Arab-American Comedy Festival in 2012 and was pictured in a New York Times feature in March about New York City's diverse comedy scene.
