Netflix is ordering a comedy series based on a festival favorite movie that shot in Minnesota.

The streaming service said Thursday it's ordering a 10-episode series of "Dear White People," a 2014 film that followed a group of black students at a majority-white Ivy League college.

"Dear White People" got pretty good reviews overall, with a 79/100 average score on Metacritic. It was also a breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival.

The movie was written, produced and directed by Justin Simien – who will also write the Netflix show, and direct the first episode.

Each episode will be 30 minutes, and the series will start filming later this year for a 2017 debut.

Is Minnesota in its future?

What isn't clear – whether they'll return to Minnesota.

The original film shot in a few spots around the Twin Cities, including the University of Minnesota, the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, and Summit Avenue in St. Paul.

Lucinda Winter, executive director for the Minnesota Film and TV Board, spoke to the Star Tribune about what might happen next.

And actually, the film took advantage of Minnesota's Snowbate program – a fund that gives rebates to filmmakers who decide to shoot in the state. (It's up to 25 percent cash back for certain eligible costs.)

Lawmakers right now are fighting over the program's future though.

Session Daily says a House bill would completely eliminate the $1.8 million budget for the program, whereas a Senate bill would increase its funding to $5.5 million.
