Experts created a new color just for Prince

Can you take a wild guess as to what it is?

Here's an important alert for all you Prince purists out there: the days of using any old shade of purple when you dress up like the Minnesota music icon are officially over.

It's because he has his very own "official" shade of purple now.

Sanctioned by the Prince estate and created in the labs of the Pantone Color Institute, "Love Symbol #2" (which is actually the name of the famous "artist formerly known as" hieroglyph) is a "distinctive new purple shade" created in memory of the singer, a joint news release says.

Here it is:

So why this particular shade of purple?

Pantone says it was inspired by Prince's famous custom-made purple piano, which was delivered to his home just a few weeks before his death (and which would have joined him on a world tour).

"While the spectrum of the color purple will still be used in respect to the 'Purple One,' Love Symbol #2, will be the official color across the brand he left behind," the news release says.

In other words (we think), it's still cool to use any shade of purple to pay tribute to Prince. But from now on, the color of any authorized Prince merchandise will very likely be Love Symbol #2.

On that note, the Prince estate says it's "in conversation with various partners about collaboration on products that incorporate the custom color."

“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” Troy Carter, Entertainment Advisor to the Prince estate, says in the release.
