The original "Famous Dave" is looking to recapture the barbecue magic that made him a household name with his latest restaurant, which he's launched in southwest Minneapolis.

Dave Anderson opened the doors on Tuesday to his first Jimmie's Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse restaurant in Minnesota, adding to the three he has in Hudson, Rice Lake and Hayward, Wisconsin.

Located in the site of the former Chatterbox Pub at 4501 France Ave. S. in Linden Hills, the eatery is promising "fresh out of the pit" authentic smokehouse flavors, and judging by pictures of opening day it looks like there's still plenty of curiosity about what Anderson has to offer.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Anderson said: "As always I am grateful for the opportunity to serve others for the sole purpose of making them delightfully happy and today we did," adding that there was a line out the door as he opened up.

The barbecue specialist made his name with Famous Dave's, opening his first restaurant in 1994 before stepping down as chairman in 2004 to lead the Bureau of Indian Affairs under President George W. Bush. He left the company fully in 2014 before being brought back last year in an advisory role.

After a period of rapid expansion, his namesake chain saw its fortunes fade after being beset by complaints about the declining quality of food and regular changes at executive level.

Jimmie's Old Southern, CityPages writes, was Anderson's attempt to get back to his "roots as a true-blue pitmaster" and the formula that made meat-lovers flock to the original Famous Dave's.

On the menu you can expect pulled pork, smoked chicken, Texas-style brisket, ribs and sides including cornbread muffin tops, sweet and mashed potatoes and mac & cheese. There's also a fridge full of craft beer next to the counter.

The chain is named after Anderson's dad, Jimmie, who Anderson said on Facebook "gave me my BBQ-loving direction in life."
