'Feels so good to be home': Janet Jackson returns to Minneapolis

On Janet Jackson Day in Minneapolis, Janet Jackson put on a fast-moving show with some special guests from her past – though the concert itself is getting uneven reviews.

The 49-year-old Jackson, who hasn't toured here since 2011, played the Target Center Sunday night as part of her Unbreakable tour.

The Pioneer Press called the show "energetic and odd," in which she fit 32 tracks into a 90-minutes performance.

The Star Tribune review said the first half "felt hopelessly rushed," but noted the last stretch of the show she "found her groove" while singing slower ballads (a shift from the dance-centric portions of the rest of the show).

And late in the concert, producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis – who helped Jackson kick-start her career in Minneapolis decades ago when she recorded "Control" at Flyte Tyme Productions Studio – came on stage to surprise their longtime colleague, The Current writes.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges was then brought on stage, where she officially declared Nov. 1 Janet Jackson Day in the city. All the while, Jackson "stood beaming demurely, visibly touched," The Current writes.

CityPages' review noted Jackson's news songs – veering away from sex-centric pop toward the more socially conscious content of her earlier work – seems to show she "has gained some form of relaxed older sister wisdom and clarity in her seven-year absence." Her last album, "Discipline," came out in 2008.

Her newest album "Unbreakable" came out Oct. 2 – and it got pretty decent reviews.
