Finnegans finally has a home, and it opens on St. Paddy's Day

It's been making beer for 17 years without its own brewery.

What's happening?

After 17 years making beer in Minneapolis, Finnegans finally has a home.

The culmination of five years' work will be realized this Saturday – fittingly, St. Patrick's Day – when the doors of Finnegans House are opened for the first time.

After Saturday's one-off event, the brewpub and innovation center will open permanently on Mar. 30.

The new brewery can be found on 5th Avenue South, in the newly designated "East Town" area of downtown Minneapolis.

Finnegans, under the leadership of co-founder Jackie Berglund, is an unusual brewery enterprise because it donates 100 percent of its profits to charity – predominantly by buying produce from local farmers, which it then donates to food shelves.

This, it explains, is how it turns "beer into food."

More about Finnegans House

Throughout its 17-year life, Finnegans has used other breweries to create its beers – including its popular Finnegans Irish Amber – with CityPages noting it first brewed out of James Page Brewing in Wisconsin.

Summit then took over the contract in 2003.

But now it's able to brew from its own, 11,000 square foot location thanks to a partnership with Badger Hill, whereby brewing will be split between Finnegans and Badger Hill's Shakopee facility.

As Finnegans explained in a press release, the two breweries will produce Badger Hill's lines one day, then switch over to Finnegans the next.

Its production brewery will produce beer available in the Finnegans House taproom, which in the warmer months will open out onto a patio.

But it's more than just a taproom, upstairs will be the Brewer's Den – a cozy, private club for "community-minded business folks" who want to mix business with craft beer.

Memberships to the club range from $30 to $90-a-month, following a $100 initiation fee.

Also in the complex is the "Finnovation Lab" – a venture services program and business incubator – as well as the Impact Hub MSP, a co-working space for leaders "working to make a positive social and environmental impact."

Finnegans Hall will eventually serve as an anchor to the next-door Marriott Autograph hotel, CityPages notes.
