First Avenue to host 4th annual Minnesota Beard-Off

Author:

Approximately 100 men and some fake-bearded women will vie for the title of 2013 Beardsman in the 4th annual Minnesota Beard-Off Saturday at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota Public Radio reports.

Organized four years ago by 28-year-old Art Allen as a way to have fun, the contest has grown in popularity ever since. It includes four categories -- full beard, partial beard, moustache and freestyle -- and a competiton for the overall Minnesota Beard-Off champion.

Allen tells MPR that he didn't expect the competition to grow "into something that people groom their beards for all year long," adding that it has become sort of a "marquee event among a certain segment of the population."

Fake beards are also welcome at the competition.

Last year, Allen says, there was a beard made of candy. Other fake beards have been made of bacon, as well as wood shavings.
