The classical music world lost a charismatic and prolific figure this weekend with the passing of conductor and violinist Sir Neville Marriner.

Marriner, who was the music director for the Minnesota Orchestra from 1979 to 1986, was 92 years old, the orchestra said on Facebook.

NPR touted him as "one of the most-recorded classical artists of all time," with more than 500 recordings with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the renowned British chamber orchestra he founded in 1958. Discogs.com lists nearly 700 releases attached to him.

Chief among his recordings that reached was the soundtrack for the 1984 film Amadeus. Overall, more than two dozen films featured his work.

According to the Academy, he "passed away peacefully in the night" on Sunday.

"Marriner was not a 'deep' conductor, but he was a very good one," the Guardian said in a lengthy obituary. "His style mirrored his outward appearance, which was neat and dapper, and his manner, which was self-deprecating in an English way."

The Minnesota Orchestra released this statement:
