Garland's 'Wizard of Oz' to get IMAX 3D treatment

The classic film that made Minnesota native Judy Garland a film legend is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a release in IMAX 3D this fall.

Warner Bros. says "The Wizard of Oz" will return to the big screen for an exclusive one-week engagement in IMAX theaters across North America beginning Sept. 20.

First released in theaters in 1939, "The Wizard of Oz" won three Oscars, including Best Song for "Over the Rainbow," Best Original Score and a special award for Outstanding Juvenile Performance by Garland -- who was born Frances Gumm in Grand Rapids in 1922.

The IMAX 3D presentation is a first for "The Wizard of Oz."

"People have asked for years about 'TheWizard of Oz' 3D conversion. My answer was always, 'We're not doing it until it's perfect.' And now it is," Warner Technical Operations’ vice president of Mastering Ned Price said in a statement. "As a kid, I was so enthralled by this film. Watching it, you just want to enter the frame, enter the Land of Oz. This new version will allow you to do just that."

The film's limited IMAX run will be followed by a "75th Anniversary Collector’s Edition" of "The Wizard of Oz" -- a five-disc set that will include Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD and UltraViolet versions of the film, which include a new documentary including interview clips from the likes of Garland and her co-stars, as well as many others.

In the meantime, organizers are readying the 38th annual Judy Garland Festival, which is set for June 13-15 in and around the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids.
