Grammy nominations touch Minnesota

Two Minnesota orchestras are among the Grammy nominees, according to the Los Angeles Times, which published the full list.

Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra are nominated in the best orchestral performance category for Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 4.

Soprano Dawn Upshaw is nominated for best classical vocal solo in a collaboration with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and composer/conductor Maria Schneider for "Winter Morning Walks." Schneider is a native of Windom, Minnesota.

The Star Tribune notes that neither orchestra worked much during the Grammy eligibility period.

The locked out Musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra celebrated the honor on their website, saying the nomination is a reminder of "all that is at risk in this lockout."

MPR News reports it will be a big week for the orchestra. The Musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra plan to present a progress report and new mission statement Monday. On Wednesday, the orchestra's parent organization will report on its finances.

The 56th annual Grammy awards show will be broadcast on CBS Jan. 26.
