Alan Thicke, best known for his role as the dad on the show Growing Pains, has died at the age of 69.

The Canadian actor had a heart attack Tuesday in Los Angeles, NPR News says. He had been playing hockey with his son Carter, the Los Angeles Times reports, noting the last thing he said was a compliment to his son on a nice shot.

Thicke leaves behind his wife and three sons, including pop musician Robin Thicke, who paid tribute to his father on Instagram Tuesday:

Alan Thicke has won seven Emmys and a Golden Globe during his acting career that spanned theater, TV and movies. He's also an author, comedian, professional speaker, produced game shows like Celebrity Sweepstakes, and composed the theme songs for numerous TV shows including Facts Of Life and Different Strokes, according to his website.

More recently, he appeared on the Netflix series Fuller House and the NBC's, This Is Us, NPR says.

Thicke's resume also includes an impressive list of hosting gigs: the Emmys, NHL Awards, the Olympic Kick-off Gala, Miss World USA, Miss Universe, and Miss USA Pageants, to name a few.

Many took to Twitter to share their condolences.
