He doesn't have a record deal, but his record is #1 on the charts

A record that debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard charts?

That's living.

And gospel singer Jovonta Patton of Minneapolis is "Finally Living," which is the title of his record that does indeed sit atop the Billboard gospel charts.

Billboard notes that the self-released album is Patton's first entry on any music chart. How did he do it?

Billboard goes on to explain: "Nearly all of the album's sales for the week were generated by venue sales, the bulk of which originated from church appearances in his Minneapolis hometown."

Patton tells the Star Tribune spreading the word on social media about where to download "Finally Living" has also helped its success. But he agrees that “a lot of the sales have also been out-of-trunk, as they say in gospel music.”

Patton and the group Deliverance For Youth also posted a live performance of one of the tracks to Facebook.

The whole "Finally Living" album was recorded live at Patton's home church on Minneapolis' north side, Shiloh Temple International Ministries.

With weekly exposure to Patton's singing, the bishop at Shiloh Temple, Richard D. Howell Jr., told the Star Tribune the chart-topping success of the album "...was no great surprise for us, because we know his talent well, and we’ve seen how much time and energy Jovonta puts into his music.”

Patton had recorded four previous albums. But with the #1 status of his latest, he's Finally Living.
