Here's your chance to create a unique piece of artwork to be displayed on a Minnesota lake.

For artists that work on the Art Shanty Projects, ice fishing houses are their canvases. And right now, the community is looking for creatives interested in designing shanties for the 2018 On-Ice Program, which will be held on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis between January 20 - February 11.

They're looking for all types of artists, from architects to writers, craftspeople, set designers, and even puppeteers. If you have an idea for a shanty, now is the time to submit a proposal.

The call for artists says there are a few things artists should think about for the design of their shanties, like environment – the lake is very windy, so shanties need to be sturdy and built out of durable materials. Other details to consider: structure, safety, mobility, and community.

To submit a proposal, artists are asked to explain what they would like to create, explain its artistic goals (how people can interact with it), and address their availability to complete the project and commit to all the related responsibilities, like helping out during the festival.

Here's where to submit your proposal – the deadline is July 31. They'll be judged by quality, design, and feasibility.

You can also find more details here.

And for a look at previous designs, check out GoMN's video of last year's festival.

More about Art Shanty Projects

The Art Shanty Projects began taking over Minnesota lakes in 2005. It started west of the metro on Medicine Lake. Then in 2014, it moved northeast to White Bear Lake. This year, it's moving to Minneapolis, where it'll stay until at least 2020.

Obviously, it's "heavily influenced" by one of Minnesota's favorite past times – ice fishing.

The program brings hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors out each year. Visitors are invited to admire the creations – inside and out – and participate in interactive activities. Attendance rose from approximately 5,000 in 2007 to a record-breaking 19,000 in 2012, the website says.

Since the shanties will be on a different lake this year, organizers are holding an info session and "Swap/Meet activity" at Better Futures in South Minneapolis on Thursday, June 29 from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
