Hey book-lovers! Saturday is Little Free Library Day

Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis is being transformed into a book-lover's paradise on Saturday for the city's first ever Little Free Library Festival.

If you're not familiar with Little Free Library, it's a relatively new nonprofit organization that encourages city centers and residents to set up – you guessed it – little free libraries.

They're about the size of a mailbox, and people fill them with books so others in the community can pick one up to read, and maybe leave a favorite book for someone else to enjoy.

Mary McCallum, a spokesperson for the event, told BringMeTheNews she estimates there are already more than 1,000 of them located throughout the state, and 40,000 across the globe. She suspects there are even more that haven't been registered through the organization.

And on Saturday – a day Gov. Mark Dayton has dubbed Little Free Library Day – 100 more boxes for books will go out into Twin Cities communities.

Celebrating books

McCallum says the day's festivities are meant to celebrate books and reading – and there are no age requirements.

There will be book readings, a Harry Potter trivia game, and a poetry contest.

Courtney Holmes, a barber from Iowa, will be giving free haircuts to kids. The catch – kids must read to him while he does his work. He got national attention last year for that.

And don't forget to bring your pooch. Dress your pup up as a favorite book character or author, and enter it in the Literary Canine Contest and Parade hosted by Sidewalk Dog.

People who bike can bring their wheels and tutus to raise money for literacy. And if you don't have a tutu, there will be some available for purchase.

Since Little Free Library is all about giving and swapping books, there will also be a massive book-swap and giveaway on Saturday. People are encouraged to bring some of their own books to help out with that.

The event will run, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
