How they choose which beers go on the State Fair Cicerone flight

Some of the best beers Minnesota has to offer are being poured at the Minnesota State Fair this year.

They're part of the Cicerone select flight at the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild’s Land of 10,000 Beers exhibit.

The exhibit itself features more than 300 brews from 75 Minnesota craft breweries and brewpubs – including 19 beermakers that weren’t at the fair last year – and of those beers, about 100 make it on the Cicerone flight throughout the fair's run.

A Cicerone is a certified beer expert – like a sommelier is for wine – and the flight features beers that are considered the "best of the best" based on various qualities.

Dave Hoops, a local beer expert, is among the people who helps choose what beers go on the flight (the flight's offerings can change by the hour – when a keg is kicked, a new Cicerone's choice beer is added to the flight).

He talked to us about how he makes the tough decision about what beers to include on the flight.

The Cicerone select flight is among six flight options available at this year's exhibit. For $10, beer drinkers get four 5-ounce samples of Minnesota brewed beer.

The exhibit, located in the Agriculture/Horticulture building, is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the fair’s run.

If you miss the exhibit this year, many of the featured beers are also available at local bars, liquor stores and at the breweries themselves.
