It might cost you more to get to the State Fair this year

Some buses are raising their prices for the fair.

It might cost you a little extra money to get to and from the Minnesota State Fair this year.

SouthWest Transit operates buses between areas like Eden Prairie and Chaska to downtown Minneapolis. And during the State Fair, it makes trips there, too. But this year, it's bumping up prices a bit.

According to the Star Tribune, SouthWest Transit used to charge adults $5 for round trips. This year, it's going up to $8.

“We are not looking to make money from the State Fair service,” CEO Len Simich said in a statement. “We are just pricing the service similar to our everyday Express Service."

He went on to explain that their goal is "to break even while still providing the excellent service people have come to expect from SouthWest Transit.”

The fares

So starting Aug. 24, people heading to the State Fair will have to pay their fares upfront. It's a round trip fee, so you won't just pay for part of the ride.

It'll be $8 for anyone ages 13 to 65. Or you can buy two tickets at once for $15.

Anyone older or younger than that can ride for $5. Same goes for people with a military ID.

People 5 and under, and disabled veterans with ID can ride for free.

Discount pre-sale tickets will be available between Aug. 1 and Aug. 18 at SouthWest Station in Eden Prairie.

Metro Pass, Go To Cards, Metro Transit Discount passes or any other promotional passes will not be accepted.

The service

According to a news release, SouthWest Transit will provide weekday service from Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie beginning at 8 a.m.

Weekend service will begin at 7 a.m. at SouthWest Station in Eden Prairie, SouthWest Village in Chanhassen, and East Creek Station in Chaska.

The last return bus from the State Fair will leave at 11:30 p.m.

Other ways to get to the fair

If you don't live in the SouthWest Transit area, or if you're looking for another way to get to and from the fair, click here.

There's parking at the fair – although that can get pretty expensive – otherwise there are free park and rides, and more.

The State Fair runs Aug. 24 to Sept. 4.
