Kendrick Lamar & hip-hop lead MTV VMA nominations

Run the Jewels, Khalid, SZA also up for VMAs.

The fantastic year for hip-hop music videos is being rightfully recognized by MTV. This year's nominations indicate that your favorite Go artists will likely be walking away with Moonmen next month.

Nabbing the most nominations is Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE," with eight nods including Video of the Year and Best Direction.

Kendrick's "HUMBLE" may have its biggest challenges in the Best Hip-Hop category when it squares off against Big Sean's “Bounce Back,” Chance the Rapper's “Same Drugs,” D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty's “Broccoli,” Migos and Lil Uzi Vert's “Bad & Boujee,” and DJ Khaled's “I’m The One.”

The biggest reactions have been in celebration for the fan-favorite, first-time nominees. Beloved newcomers SZA, Khalid and Young M.A. will be duking it out for Best New Artist. Logic's "Black SpiderMan" also was named as a contender for the new Best Fight Against the System category. While they've all made a splash, perhaps the biggest story is 20+ year vets Run the Jewels and DJ Shadow landing their first VMA nomination ever, a Best Cinematography nod for "Nobody Speak."

The VMAs always make for interesting combinations of artists vying for the honors. Where else could DJ Khaled and Rihanna's "Wild Thoughts" go head to head against Bruno Mars' "24 K Magic," THE WEEKND's "Reminder" and Kendrick for Video of the Year? Probably the most compelling match-up is hip-hop's past and future colliding when Kyle's "I Spy" faces off against A Tribe Called Quest's "Dis Generation" for Best Visual Effects.

As hard as it is to pick our favorites – and we're having a hard time deciding between the post-apocalyptic visual mastery of Future's "Mask Off" against the viral chaos of Young Thug's disastrous "Wyclef Jean," we're pumped for the broadcast. The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards air August 27.
