'Making a Murderer' takes home 4 Emmy awards

Author:

"Making a Murderer," the wildly successful Netflix show that investigated the convictions of two Wisconsin men, won four Creative Arts Emmy Awards Sunday night.

The docuseries – which debuted Dec. 18, 2015, and quickly became a hit – was nominated for six Emmys, and ended up sweeping the top three nonfiction categories Sunday night, Deadline explains.

The series won for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series; Outstanding Directing for a Nonfiction Program; and Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program, according to the Emmys website. It also won an Emmy for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program.

If you haven't seen the series, it questions the guilt of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, both of whom were convicted in the 2005 murder of 25-year-old Teresa Halbach.

The series goes over Avery’s 2007 trial and questions the circumstances that led to his arrest and conviction. It suggests Avery was framed by law enforcement in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, and that Dassey was manipulated by his defense team into confessing.

Since the show premiered on Netflix last year, Avery and Dassey's attorneys have been working to get their convictions overturned. Dassey's was overturned last month, but prosecutors are appealing the ruling, the New York Times reports.

This process is expected to be featured in the second season of "Making a Murderer." Co-creators Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi spoke to reporters after winning Sunday night, saying they will continue to document the justice process as it continues, Variety reports.

"This is just part of the process," Demos said of Dassey's ongoing legal battle, according to Rolling Stone. "This is justice at work and we will continue to document that. It's a very trying time for all the families involved on both sides to continue to have this unresolved and ongoing, but that’s sort of how justice works, so we’ll continue to follow it."
