McDonald's is going to start using "fresh beef" in quarter pounders next year.
Don't worry, McDonald's uses 100 percent beef in its burgers – they're just flash frozen, which helps preserve the flavor and freshness of the meat, the company said on Twitter. What's changing is that in mid-2018, McDonald's will be serving fresh beef quarter pounder burgers that'll be cooked when they're ordered, a news release says.
USA Today says this move is one way McDonald's is stepping up its game to compete against other fast-food restaurants that tout their fresh beef patties, like Wendy's and Shake Shack. And Wendy's made sure to jump on the troll train after McDonald's announced the fresh beef news:

McDonald's says this is the latest consumer-led initiative that it's implementing, noting it's also made a commitment to use only cage-free eggs by 2025; only serving chicken that's not treated with antibiotics; and removing artificial preservatives from many menu items, among other things.
"Delivering fresh beef that's prepared when our customers order their food is just another example of how we are raising the bar. We're just getting started, and can't wait to show you what's next," McDonald's USA President Chris Kempczinski said in the release.
When asked, Kempczinski didn't say how long it'll take to use fresh beef in the rest of McDonald's burgers, USA Today says.
