McDonald's traveled through time to bring back Szechuan Sauce

If you're a Rick and Morty fan, this news will be a dream come true: McDonald's might be bringing back Szechuan Sauce.

The fast food giant sent a jug of the discontinued condiment to the show's creator Justin Roiland this weekend. It hasn't been around since 1998, when Disney's Mulan was in theaters.

Incase you're not familiar with the Rick and Morty Szechuan Sauce saga, there's an episode dedicated to the main character trying to get his hands on the stuff. Rick purposely gets captured by aliens just so he can go back in time to get the sauce.

The episode inspired a petition on Change.org to bring back the sauce, which has gained over 36,000 signatures. The fandom is so real that a packet from 1998 sold on eBay earlier this year for $14,700.

So while at this year’s Comic-Con, Roiland joked that he’d been pressuring McDonald’s to start making it again, Gizmodo says.

Then late Saturday night, Roiland tweeted these photos:

McDonald's deserves so many points for this. Not only did they send Roiland a 64-ounce jug, they came up with an other-wordly explanation about how they got it.

The note to Roiland (below) describes how McDonald's traveled to another dimension "where it's always 1998."

"No smartphones, no social media. It's a weird, scary place. But they've got Szechuan Sauce on the regular menu," it says.

Obviously fans started freaking out. The excitement heightened even more after McDonald's tweeted it's own photo featuring jugs of the sauce on Sunday.

McDonald's teased that they weren't able to bring home very much sauce from the always-1998 dimension, and said there aren't plans to offer it in the restaurants right now.

But the note to Roiland mentions “a few lucky fans will get to experience the glory,” so nugget lovers will just have to stay tuned to find out what exactly that means.
