Cloquet artist lands DNR's 2014 Trout Stamp

Living along the shores of Big Lake in Cloquet, Stuart Nelson calls himself an isolationist, but the retired Potlatch paper plant worker is back in the spotlight of the fishing world...once again.

The Pine Journal reports that the the 66-year-old's painting of a rainbow trout leaping to consume a mayfly has been chosen from 13 submissions for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) 2014 Trout Stamp.

This type of victory isn't new to Nelson. He won this same contest in 1999 but hadn't entered since, choosing to paint other fish competitively, reports the paper. Nelson won the DNR's 2011 Walleye Stamp contest, according to the Associated Press.

Nelson tells the Pine Journal he honed his skills during breaks at the mill where he would draw on tables covered over with mill-produced papers. He paints his DNR contest entries with needle-haired brushes on a 6 ½-by-9-inch white board.

The DNR offers no prizes for the stamp contest winner. The winning artist retains the right to reproduce the work.
